About the role
We are looking for a Senior Security Engineer to join our Technology team in Sydney.
Security is a force multiplier at Stake. We work alongside Engineering, Product and Infrastructure to build security into everything we create, helping teams move quickly while protecting our customers, platform and business. Rather than acting as a gatekeeper, we enable engineers to build secure, resilient systems with confidence.
As a Senior Security Engineer, you'll combine deep software engineering expertise with strong security judgement to shape how secure software is built across Stake. You'll lead complex, high-impact initiatives that span multiple teams, influence architectural decisions early and establish the standards, tooling and practices that make security scalable. Your work will improve developer experience while strengthening our security posture as the business continues to grow.
This is an opportunity to shape the future of secure engineering at one of Australia's fastest-growing technology companies. You'll partner closely with Engineering, Infrastructure, Risk and Compliance leaders, influencing decisions that balance customer protection, engineering velocity and long-term business outcomes. We work hybrid spending 3 days in our beautiful, dog-friendly Sydney office.
What success looks like
Over the next two years, you will:
- Define and evolve the secure engineering practices that become the default across Stake's technology organisation.
- Lead complex application security initiatives spanning multiple engineering teams, improving the resilience of our applications, infrastructure and software development lifecycle.
- Influence architecture and technical design decisions early, helping teams solve difficult security challenges without slowing delivery.
- Build security tooling, automation and guardrails that enable engineers to identify and resolve risks before they reach production.
- Raise the security capability of the engineering organisation through mentoring, practical guidance and secure engineering education.
- Strengthen Stake's ability to detect, respond to and learn from security incidents across customer-facing and internal systems.
- Partner with Engineering, Infrastructure, Risk and Compliance to make pragmatic security decisions that support both innovation and regulatory obligations.
- Become a trusted technical leader whose judgement shapes how Stake approaches secure software engineering at scale.
You'll thrive here if…
- You've led complex application security initiatives across multiple engineering teams and enjoy solving broad technical challenges through influence.
- You have deep experience in application security, secure software engineering and modern cloud-native architectures.
- You're comfortable shaping technical direction, establishing engineering standards and influencing decisions without relying on formal authority.
- You balance pragmatism with a high security bar, making thoughtful trade-offs that protect customers while enabling teams to move quickly.
- You enjoy mentoring engineers, sharing knowledge and raising the security capability of the wider organisation.
- You communicate complex technical risks clearly and build trusted relationships across Engineering, Product and Infrastructure.
Bonus if you've ever
- Defined secure engineering standards or application security strategy for a growing technology company.
- Built internal security platforms, developer tooling or DevSecOps automation at scale.
- Led security reviews for distributed systems, cloud-native platforms or highly available production environments.
- Worked in fintech, financial services or another highly regulated technology environment.
- Supported security frameworks such as ISO 27001, SOC 2 or the Essential Eight.
