WSP · United Kingdom
What if you could do the kind of work the world needs?
At WSP, you can access our global scale, contribute to landmark projects and connect with the brightest minds in your field to do the best work of your life. You can embrace your curiosity in a culture that celebrates new ideas and diverse perspectives. You can experience a world of opportunity and the chance to shape a career as unique as you.
A little more about your role...
As a HV Cable Engineer within WSP’s Offshore Engineering Team, you will apply your technical knowledge and engineering judgement to support WSP’s growing offshore wind and interconnector portfolio. This will involve you completing the engineering and delivery of cable design tasks supporting HVAC and HVDC systems. You will be responsible for completing defined engineering tasks in accordance with the project programme, to budget and in accordance with WSP quality requirements.
The role will cover core engineering design work, design assurance and owners engineering from Concept through to detailed design stages. Future capability of the team extends to project execution, therefore providing an opportunity to continue your personal development and growth alongside the strategic growth plan for the Subsea Engineering Team at WSP.
The role is supported by a team of HV Cable Engineers, HVDC team and the wider offshore wind and transmission team.
You will operate within a client facing role, with daily interactions with key stakeholders and clients, where you will be expected to be professional and communicate clearly, work collaboratively across multi-disciplinary engineering teams and contribute positively to safe, high-quality and commercially effective project delivery.
Day-Day Activities:
- Apply knowledge of HVAC inter-array and export cable systems, typically operating between 66 kV and 132 kV, to support cable sizing, design basis documentation, design reports and current-rating studies.
- Support the design of HVDC interconnector cable systems, including systems rated up to 525 kV, under the guidance of suitably experienced engineers.
- Develop practical knowledge of static and dynamic cable applications, recognising when specialist input or escalation is required.
- The Engineer will support multidisciplinary project delivery by translating client and project requirements into clearly well-defined cable engineering outputs, while building experience across offshore cable design, procurement, installation, and operation and decommissioning.
- Undertake defined electrical and mechanical cable engineering tasks using agreed methods, standards and project procedures, seeking guidance on complex or unfamiliar matters.
- Prepare and check calculations covering cable ratings, electrical characteristics, mechanical loads, pull-in tensions, installation constraints and associated design inputs, appropriate to the complexity of the task and the Engineer’s level of experience.
- Support the preparation of cable system designs and specifications covering conductors, insulation systems, metallic sheaths, armour, outer serving, accessories and cable protection systems.
- Produce clear calculations, specifications, reports, drawings and technical notes, and maintain accurate design records in accordance with WSP and project quality procedures.
- Review client requirements, supplier documentation and information from other disciplines, identifying gaps, assumptions, interfaces and issues that may affect the design or client outcome.
- Coordinate with project managers, lead engineers, other disciplines, clients and suppliers to obtain inputs, communicate progress and support the timely resolution of routine technical matters.
- Deliver assigned tasks in accordance with agreed programme, budget and quality requirements, maintain accurate time records and provide reliable progress updates for project reporting.
- Identify and communicate potential changes, risks and opportunities affecting scope, programme, cost, quality, safety or technical performance, and implement agreed mitigation measures within assigned tasks.
- Contribute to proposals and small project extensions by preparing technical scopes, assumptions, deliverable lists, estimates and supporting tender information.
- Engage professionally with clients and suppliers, understand how assigned work contributes to client needs, and respond constructively to feedback.
- Share knowledge and experience with colleagues, support less-experienced team members where appropriate, and actively pursue professional development and professional recognition.
- Identify opportunities to improve engineering practices, tools and ways of working, and contribute to the implementation of agreed improvements.
- Use relevant engineering and analysis software. Experience of CYMCAP, DNV Stablelines, AutoCAD, Autodesk Inventor and specialist cable analysis software is desirable.
- Opportunity to get on-site or witness cable manufacturing activities acting on behalf of our clients such as National Grid and Others.
- Travel to client, supplier or project locations may be required, depending on project needs.
What we will be looking for you to demonstrate...
- A Bachelors Degree in Engineering or equivalent technical discipline, preferably Electrical or Power engineering.
- Prior experience in offshore cable engineering, marine renewable energy, or oil and gas industry is highly desirable.
- Desirable - HVDC projects both onshore and offshore; including HV cable system design and ratings (CYMCAP)
- Strong knowledge of submarine cable systems, including cable design, installation methods, and industry standards
- Familiarity with offshore design development works, marine construction projects, and subsea infrastructure design.
