Cloud & Hosting - Senior Product Owner - Modern Engineering

GSK · United States, Pennsylvania, Philadelphia · hybrid

GSK remains committed to achieving bold commercial ambitions for the future. By 2031, we aim to deliver £40 billion in annual sales, leveraging our existing strong performance momentum to significantly increase our positive impact on the health of billions of patients globally. Our Ahead Together strategy is centred on early intervention to prevent and alter the course of disease, thereby protecting people and supporting healthcare systems.

Our diverse portfolio consists of vaccines, specialty medicines, and general medicines.

Through continuous innovation and a dedicated focus on scientific and technical excellence, we strive to develop and launch new, groundbreaking treatments that address critical health challenges.

Position SummaryAs Senior Product Owner for Cloud & Hosting in Modern Engineering, you will own the strategy, roadmap and outcomes for the platforms GSK engineers use every day: developer tooling (GitHub, Azure DevOps etc), infrastructure automation (Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform), cloud hosting on Azure and Google Cloud, observability, and AI-enabled engineering.

This is a hands-on product leadership role. You will set direction, make prioritisation calls with evidence, and stay close enough to the engineering to validate architecture, prototype solutions and challenge trade-offs. You will work across engineering, platform owners, security, quality, finance, procurement and business stakeholders in both the US and UK to deliver platform capabilities that are secure, compliant, reliable and cost-effective by design.

Success in this role is measured by outcomes, not output: faster and safer delivery for engineering teams, higher platform adoption and developer satisfaction, consolidated and optimised toolchain spend, and controls built into the platform rather than bolted on.

This role offers significant scope to shape GSK's engineering platform strategy and direct alignment with our mission of uniting science, technology and talent to get ahead of disease together.

Key ResponsibilitiesThese responsibilities include:

Product strategy and outcomes

- Vision and roadmap: Own a 12–18 month roadmap for the Cloud & Hosting portfolio, tied to engineering, security and business strategy, and defend it with a clear prioritisation method (WSJF, RICE or cost of delay).

- Outcome metrics: Define targets and report on adoption, DORA metrics, developer experience (NPS/DevEx), SLO attainment and cost per user; use them to steer investment and retire low-value work.

- Customer discovery: Run interviews, surveys and usage analysis with delivery teams across the US and UK to find and size the highest-value problems.

- Backlog ownership: Write and prioritise epics and features with clear acceptance criteria across two or more platform teams; lead quarterly planning (PI or OKR-based).

Technical leadership

- Hands-on engineering: Take part in architecture reviews, technical design, proof-of-concepts, implementation validation and troubleshooting. Build or modify representative CI/CD pipelines, Ansible automation, scripts and API integrations to test feasibility and quality, without replacing engineering delivery ownership.

- Toolchain strategy: As an example lead the business case and phased plan for Azure DevOps-to-GitHub consolidation and licence optimisation; technically validate similar migration patterns, workflows, runners, identity and controls.

- Platform reliability and observability: Review logs, metrics, traces, dashboards, incidents and SLOs with engineering teams; turn root causes, operational findings and technical debt into measurable product improvements.

Secure, compliant and AI-ready by design

- Built-in controls: Partner with Security, Quality and GRC to deliver GxP, SOX, software supply chain and AI guardrail controls as product features (for example policy-as-code, signed artefacts, hardened images and audit evidence), and verify them through technical review and testing.

- AI in engineering: Shape the roadmap for GitHub Copilot, AI agents experience in Developer toolings, including usage policy, identity, approvals, operational safeguards and value measurement.

Leadership and commercial

- Stakeholder management: Align senior leaders, architects and delivery teams across regions on priorities; say no with evidence.

- Vendor and commercial: Manage roadmaps and renewals with Red Hat, GitHub, Microsoft, Google and observability/AIOps vendors; own budget inputs, licence utilisation and technical product assessments.

- Adoption and change: Drive onboarding, documentation, champions networks and release communications so new capabilities are used, not just shipped.

Why You?Basic QualificationsWe are seeking professionals with the following required skills and qualifications to help us achieve our goals:

Experience

- Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, business or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

- 10+ years in technology, including 4+ years as a product owner or product manager for internal platforms, developer tools or infrastructure products.

- Delivery experience in pharmaceuticals, healthcare, financial services or another regulated industry, with working knowledge of change control, validation and audit processes.

Product management

- Built and defended a multi-quarter roadmap using a clear method (e.g. WSJF, RICE, cost of delay).

- Managed backlogs for two or more teams using Jira or Azure DevOps Boards, applying SAFe, Scrum or Kanban.

- Defined and reported adoption, DORA or developer experience (DevEx) metrics.

- Conducted structured user research with internal customers and turned insights into product features.

- Developed a funded business case or migration plan covering costs, benefits and risks.

- Influenced senior leaders and multiple delivery teams without formal authority.

Hands-on engineering

- Designed, configured and troubleshot GitHub Actions and/or Azure DevOps YAML pipelines, including security and integration controls.

- Hands-on with Ansible and scripting or Infrastructure as Code (Python, PowerShell or Terraform).

- Working knowledge of Azure and/or Google Cloud architecture, identity, networking and platform integration.

- Investigated logs, metrics and traces and used operational evidence to improve SLOs and reliability.

- Led technical design reviews, proof-of-concepts, API integration assessments and solution validation.

- Technical ability to integrate AI in platforms, run poc's and assessments.

Preferred QualificationsIf you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:

- Background as an engineer, cloud, SRE or DevOps practitioner who moved into product leadership.

- Built reusable devex platform playbooks and automation patterns at enterprise scale.

- Scripted in Programming/scripting languages like Python or PowerShell to pull usage, cost or operational data from platform APIs.

- Built observability dashboards, queried telemetry and supported incident and root-cause analysis.

- Hands-on evaluation of GitHub Copilot, AI agents, MCP-based integrations , including secure execution controls, least-privilege identity and human-in-the-loop approvals.

- Familiarity with software supply chain security (SBOM, artefact signing, hardened base images) and cloud security posture tooling.

- Experience working across India, US and UK teams, time zones and regulatory contexts (e.g. FDA and MHRA expectations for GxP systems).

Working PatternThis role can be based in the United States or the United Kingdom and is hybrid. You will be expected to attend the office as agreed with your manager for team and stakeholder collaboration, and to work across US and UK time zones with engineering, security and business partners in both regions. Occasional travel between sites may be required.
