Senior Financial Systems Engineer
Berlitz · Germany Remote · remote
We're building a new global Berlitz, and this is your opportunity to help shape it. Nearly 150 years of expertise, meeting the ambition and technology to power a new era of learning.
If you are the kind of person who thrives in a fast-paced environment, isn’t afraid of a blank page, and is excited to help shape the future of a global company undergoing a significant transformation, you might belong at Berlitz!
About the roleBerlitz is rebuilding its commercial and financial platform. That includes a new CRM, usage-based billing, modern payment processing, and a consolidated ERP, all supporting new digital products for learners, teachers, and enterprise customers.
We're looking for a Senior Financial Systems Engineer to own the flow of money through that platform, from quote and checkout through billing and payment to the general ledger. You'll be the technical authority on how our systems exchange financial data. You'll make sure every customer, invoice, payment, refund, and credit reconciles cleanly at month-end.
This is a hands-on engineering role that sits at the intersection of engineering and finance. You'll report into Engineering and work day to day with Finance, RevOps, and our external NetSuite implementation partner.
What you'll do- Own the architecture and data contracts for our order-to-cash flow across HubSpot, Stripe, Adyen, Metronome, and NetSuite.
- Build and maintain integrations using NetSuite SuiteScript and REST/SuiteTalk, PSP APIs and webhooks, and our iPaaS (Workato), choosing custom code or low-code where each makes sense.
- Design reconciliation between payment processors, billing, bank settlements, and the ledger, and build the jobs, alerts, and audit trails that keep it reliable.
- Model prepaid credit packages and usage-based consumption correctly, including deferred revenue, drawdown, expiry, refunds, and credit notes.
- Support multi-entity, multi-currency operations, including subsidiaries, intercompany flows, FX, and tax handling.
- Act as the technical counterpart to our NetSuite implementation partner: review designs, challenge assumptions, and take ownership of what they build.
- Partner with Finance to shorten and de-risk month-end close by removing manual work and fixing data quality at the source.
- Document the financial data model and integrations so the platform is supportable beyond you.
What you'll bring- 6+ years in software engineering, with at least 3 years building or owning financial, billing, or payments systems.
- Hands-on NetSuite development experience (SuiteScript 2.x, REST/SuiteTalk, saved searches) and a solid understanding of its record model, including customers, sales orders, invoices, payments, deposits, and journals.
- Production experience integrating Stripe and/or Adyen, including webhooks, idempotency, payouts and settlement reports, disputes, and fees.
- Real accounting literacy. You can explain revenue recognition, deferred revenue, cash application, and bank reconciliation, and you know why they matter to Finance.
- Strong integration engineering fundamentals: API design, event-driven patterns, retries and error handling, and data validation.
- Comfort working across teams and translating between engineers, accountants, and commercial stakeholders.
- Good judgement under deadline pressure, with the ability to ship pragmatically without creating reconciliation debt.
Nice to have- Experience with usage-based or consumption billing platforms (Metronome, Orb, Chargebee, or similar).
- Experience with HubSpot, Salesforce, or other CRM-to-ERP integrations.
- iPaaS experience (Workato, Boomi, Celigo, MuleSoft).
- Experience migrating from a legacy billing or CRM system to a new stack.
- Exposure to SOC 2 / ISO 27001 controls around financial systems.
- Experience at a multi-country business or in education / subscription services.
What success looks like- First 90 days: You understand our current order-to-cash flows end to end. You've taken technical ownership of the payments-to-ledger integration and identified the biggest reconciliation risks.
- First 6 months: New products bill, collect, and post to NetSuite correctly across entities and currencies. Month-end reconciliation between PSPs and the ledger is largely automated.
- First year: Our financial systems are well documented, monitored, and trusted by Finance, and they're ready to scale to new products and markets.
Why Berlitz- A rare chance to shape a financial platform nearly from scratch at a global brand with a long history.
- Direct impact on how the company operates and reports, with high visibility across Engineering, Finance, and leadership.
- A team that values pragmatic engineering and cross-functional ownership.
