The University of Washington Division (UW) of the Office of the Attorney General is seeking an experienced attorney to join the Division’s Healthcare Team as an Assistant Attorney General (AAG).
Duties
This position offers a unique opportunity to advise and represent UW Medicine’s multi-entity academic health system, as well as UW’s Health Sciences schools and world-class biomedical research community. The Healthcare Team advises UW on a diverse range of healthcare and higher education matters, including fraud and abuse, antitrust, contracting, insurance and reimbursement, medical staff, data privacy and security, student and trainee matters, federal executive actions, strategic affiliations and partnerships, and more.
The team’s clients include UW Medical Center and Harborview Medical Center; Airlift Northwest; UW Medicine’s Graduate Medical Education program; UW Medicine’s strategy, external affairs, finance, and supply chain teams; along with the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, and others.
The Healthcare Team currently includes six Assistant Attorneys General (AAGs), who report to a Managing AAG. The team fosters a culture of cooperation and collegiality and is part of the UW Division of the Attorney General’s Office. Located in Seattle’s University District, the UW Division is comprised of attorneys organized into three teams, General Practice, Employment, and Healthcare, as well as support personnel. AAGs across the UW Division routinely collaborate and jointly advise UW clients on complex matters.
Qualifications
In addition to meeting the requirements to serve as an Assistant Attorney General, candidates are preferred to have at least five years of legal experience, with experience in healthcare or higher education law preferred. Applicants should have practical problem-solving abilities, strong interpersonal skills, and approach client advice with a sense of curiosity. Attorneys who enjoy problem-solving in partnership with client workgroups and learning about new areas of law will enjoy our hard-working and collegial team. We seek an active listener and quick study who is excited to represent an academic health system and has a strong interest in understanding the client's strategic interests.

Applicants must have graduated from a law school accredited by the ABA or completed the WSBA's Rule 6 Law Clerk Program; and be licensed to practice law in Washington state. (Applicants who meet the other stated qualifications and are actively pursuing admission by motion will also be considered.) This Assistant Attorney General position is represented by the Association of Washington Assistant Attorneys General (AWAAG) / Washington Federation of State Employees (WFSE) AFSCME Council 28, AFL-CIO. AAG salaries are set between $83,856 and $157,080. The exact amount is set in accordance with Appendix B of the AWAAG CBA. The salary of an employee whose official duty station is Seattle would reflect 5% King County Assignment Pay per legislative action. A competitive state benefits package is also offered which includes a choice of medical/dental insurance plans, retirement, life and basic long-term disability insurance.
