Job Description

AtkinsRealis is one of Canada's largest private sector nuclear engineering groups. We have been providing a wide range of services to the nuclear industry in Canada and around the world for more than 60 years. We are proud to be the steward of Canadian CANDU nuclear technology.
AtkinsRealis is currently looking for an Intermediate NDE Technician/Technologist (Level 4) to support our nuclear manufacturing, inspection, maintenance, refurbishment, and field service activities and report to the Technical Manager, NDE and Metallurgy. The successful candidate will perform and document non-destructive examinations, evaluate examination results against approved acceptance criteria, and provide practical technical support to project, manufacturing, quality, and field teams. This is a technical position and is not an engineering position.
The employee will work closely with NDE personnel, Quality Assurance and Quality Control, Manufacturing, Production Control, Engineering, Project Management, Supply Chain, suppliers, and customers. The employee will be required to obtain security clearance for Candu Energy Inc. facilities and customer sites and may be required to travel to manufacturing facilities, supplier locations, and client sites, both domestically and internationally.
The employee may participate in short-term field service assignments on Candu Field Services projects, typically during customer outages and at customer sites. During these assignments, the employee may perform work in a radiological work environment and will be required to satisfy applicable Nuclear Energy Worker, radiation protection, customer onboarding, and project-specific training requirements.
Your role
- Perform ultrasonic testing (UT) and eddy current testing (ET) examinations in accordance with approved procedures, drawings, specifications, codes, standards, and project requirements.
- Set up, calibrate, function-check, and operate NDE instruments, probes, scanners, reference standards, fixtures, and associated equipment.
- Interpret and evaluate examination data and indications within the scope of Level 2 certification and applicable written instructions or procedures.
- Prepare accurate examination records, data sheets, sketches, scan plans, calibration records, and technical reports that are complete, traceable, and suitable for quality records.
- Verify that examination prerequisites are satisfied, including surface condition, access, equipment status, calibration blocks, procedure revision, hold points, and environmental conditions.
- Identify, document, and communicate reportable indications, examination limitations, equipment issues, and conditions adverse to quality.
- Support the development and improvement of NDE techniques, written instructions, scan plans, work packages, inspection and test plans, and field execution documentation.
- Provide timely technical support to manufacturing shops, suppliers, project teams, and field personnel during inspection, fabrication, assembly, testing, maintenance, and refurbishment activities.
- Review applicable work scope, drawings, specifications, procedures, and acceptance criteria before performing assigned examinations.
- Maintain control and proper care of NDE equipment, probes, cables, reference standards, consumables, software, and examination data.
- Support equipment troubleshooting, minor maintenance, inventory control, readiness checks, and coordination of calibration or repair services.
- Participate in pre-job briefings, post-job reviews, lessons learned, operating experience reviews, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Work effectively with Level 3 personnel and other technical specialists when procedure interpretation, technique development, or disposition support is required.
- Provide practical guidance and on-the-job support to junior NDE personnel and trainees within the limits of assigned qualifications and company procedures.
- Comply with applicable health, safety, radiation protection, quality assurance, security, human performance, and customer-site requirements.
- Travel to project sites, supplier facilities, and customer locations, both domestic and international, as required.
About you
- College diploma in Non-Destructive Testing, Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Materials Technology, Welding Technology, or a related technical discipline. An equivalent combination of education, training, and relevant experience may be considered.
- Current Level 2 certification in Ultrasonic Testing (UT) and Level 2 certification in Eddy Current Testing (ET), in accordance with CAN/CGSB-48.9712 or an accepted equivalent certification scheme.
- Intermediate-level experience performing UT and ET examinations in industrial, manufacturing, power generation, nuclear, aerospace, petrochemical, pressure equipment, or similarly regulated environments.
- Demonstrated ability to set up and calibrate equipment, acquire quality data, interpret indications, evaluate results, and prepare clear examination reports.
- Working knowledge of NDE terminology, discontinuity types, materials, fabrication methods, welding processes, component geometry, and factors affecting examination reliability.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, weld symbols, specifications, procedures, inspection plans, and acceptance criteria.
- Familiarity with quality-controlled work, document control, configuration control, non-conformance processes, and traceable quality records.
- Strong computer skills and experience working with digital NDE data, analysis software, electronic records, and standard Microsoft Office applications.
- Demonstrated attention to detail, sound technical judgment, and the ability to recognize and promptly escalate conditions outside the scope of assigned certification.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team in shop, laboratory, supplier, and field environments.
- Strong organizational, analytical, written, verbal, and customer relationship skills.
- Ability to manage competing priorities, work shifts or extended hours when required, and support outage-driven schedules.
- Ability to travel to manufacturing facilities, supplier locations, and client sites as required.
- Commitment to safety, quality, integrity, customer focus, teamwork, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement.
Preferred experience:
- NDE experience on nuclear components, pressure-retaining components, heat exchangers, tubing, piping, welds, or reactor maintenance equipment.
- Experience with advanced UT or ET techniques, encoded data acquisition, automated or mechanized scanning systems, and digital analysis software.
- Additional Level 2 certification in methods such as magnetic particle testing (MT), liquid penetrant testing (PT), or visual testing (VT).
- Familiarity with CSA N285.0, CSA B51, the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, or other applicable nuclear and pressure-boundary requirements.
- Experience supporting field services, planned outages, radiation protection requirements, remote tooling, or work in radiological environments.
