Leadership Development Senior Specialist

mars · MVA-Mars, Incorporated, United States

Job Description:

Job Summary:

Mars is committed to cultivating world-class leadership that drives the future success of the business. This role plays a key part in that commitment by supporting the development and activation of a simple and shared standard for leadership across Mars, while enabling the flexibility required for Segments to address their unique business needs.

Today, Mars leaders do not have clear and consistent guidance on what is expected of them, the capabilities required for success or a shared view on how leadership excellence is assessed. While Mars has a range of leadership models and behavior frameworks, these are often fragmented, applied inconsistently or not fully embedded across the business.

The Leadership Development Senior Specialist will help address this by supporting the development of a distinct set of Mars Leader Expectations and translating those Expectations into clear, observable behaviors and competencies that provide leaders with practical guidance on what success looks like.

The role will design the supporting competencies/capabilities architecture and coordinate the enterprise-wide effort to embed the Expectations, behaviors and competencies into key people processes, including recruitment, assessment, performance management, talent reviews, succession planning and leader and manager development, ensuring they are consistently applied across Mars in all relevant P&O processes and products. Significant upskilling, communications and change will be required to deliver reach and impact from this Leader Expectations work.

Operating at a global level, this role will work closely with senior P&O leaders in Corporate and MGS, Segment P&O teams, Centers of Excellence and business leaders across Mars to align stakeholders, connect workstreams and support enterprise-wide adoption.

Success in the role will require deep expertise of leadership competency frameworks and the ability to effectively manage the multi-year activation of the Expectations through a complex enterprise-wide program. Strong stakeholder management and a solid understanding of leadership and talent practices will be critical. The successful candidate will also be required to translate strategic intent of the Expectations into practical solutions, aligning and supporting stakeholders across multiple workstreams, anticipating dependencies and driving delivery through thoughtful planning and coordination.

Key responsibilities:

- Translate Leader Expectations into a Mars Inc capabilities architecture including behaviors and competencies which can be applied across different leadership levels and contexts.

- Make recommendations and provide a structured plan to update or retire existing competencies that are in use across P&O processes and products and co-ordinate with Segment and Functions to simplify the landscape of other frameworks to bring simplicity and clarity to the end user.

- Collaborate with Segments to ensure the Expectations and behaviors can be measured in the day-to-day flow of work.

- Partner with CoEs and Segments to identify activation points across people processes, plan and align on the sequence of the integration and the measurable impact to show the enterprise journey towards consistent leadership excellence.

- Create terms of reference to guide how Expectations should be utilized and applied including how Segments may supplement the core behaviors if required.

- Integrate Expectations across the P&O lifecycle working directly with process owners to translate concepts into changes in tools, systems, guidance, language and procedures and support on related change management.

- Equip P&O and leaders to use the Expectations through guidance, resources and enablement initiatives.

- Embed Expectations through leader development owned by the Leader Development CoE and other Talent, Culture, I&D and Health & Wellbeing CoEs, to ensure curricula and resources reflect the capability architecture and real leadership situations.

- Build and manage the overall roadmap for the Expectations activation, including milestones, governance, decision points, dependencies, risks and reporting.

- Build strong relationships with senior leaders to secure alignment, commitment and timely decisions.

- Establish and facilitate governance forums, steering committees, workshops and focus groups to drive progress and gather input.

- Manage relationships with external vendors and development experts, ensuring high-quality delivery, clear accountabilities and value from partnerships.

- Develop and execute communication plans keeping stakeholders and leaders in the driving seat by listening and adjusting this multi-year activation agenda.

- Support change management effort and activities to drive adoption and create a consistent leadership lifecycle experience across Mars.

- Monitor adoption and effectiveness of the Expectations and supporting behaviors and competencies, identifying opportunities for continuous improvement and refinement.

- Ensure alignment with the manager development ecosystem, the existing GLM objective with the aim of providing increased simplicity for managers through the Expectations.

Required Experiences and Qualifications:

- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Human Resources, Leadership / Organizational Development, Business Administration, or a related field.

- Proven track record of building and supporting the delivery of complex global development initiatives involving multiple stakeholders.

- Experience of building competency frameworks and/or capability architecture with end-to-end integration from concept to delivery is essential.

- Experience working on people-related topics, such as leadership, capability development, learning, talent or organizational effectiveness, preferably a Segment CoE talent or learning role or corporate P&O

- Strong stakeholder management skills, with experience building relationships, driving alignment, influencing decisions and managing competing priorities across senior leaders and cross-functional teams.

- Strong communication skills, with experience preparing clear updates, executive-ready materials, and communications for a range of stakeholder groups.

- Strong analytical skills, with experience using data, KPIs and reporting to monitor progress, identify issues, and inform decision-making.
