Senior Safety Engineer

reframesystems · Billerica, MA · onsite

ABOUT USReframe Systems is a Physical AI and robotics company on a mission to make high-performance housing attainable and abundant in the communities where people want to live. Through our vertically integrated delivery model and highly automated microfactories, we deliver climate-resilient homes and buildings with greater speed and predictability than traditional construction.

Our volumetric modular buildings are produced in our Billerica, MA microfactory, with a growing pipeline across North America. We are building a system that balances repeatability with site-responsive design, enabling homes adaptable to each site, community, and customer need. Our cross-disciplinary team brings together architecture, robotics, design engineering, software, factory operations, and field delivery to change how housing gets delivered.

We're reimagining the future of housing through a smarter and more sustainable system that empowers people to live better. Come build it with us.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FORWe're looking for a Senior Safety Engineer to own environmental, health, and safety for a factory that builds home modules, and for the field operations that install them on site. Our production mixes automated framing equipment, robotic workcells, CNC processing, overhead lifting, and skilled hand trades working on and around 40-foot modules, with both in-factory and field construction operations.

Our EHS program is young. Station-level hazard assessments, PPE requirements, an emergency action plan, and a training framework are in place, and you'll take over from the teammate who built them. Your job is to foster a company-wide safety culture by turning that foundation into a durable EHS management system that keeps pace with our production ramp. That means taking high-level regulations and “operationalizing” them into standards our employees understand and follow.

This is a hands-on, on-site role for someone who has built a program from the ground up, not inherited a mature one; you'll spend much of your time on the floor, and work closely with production, facilities, and engineering leadership, with the expectation to run the program on modern software tools, not binders.

You don't need to have held an EHS title. If you've built and run compliance programs under heavy external oversight, such as naval nuclear propulsion, aviation maintenance, nuclear power, or pharma and medical device quality, and you know how to operationalize regulations into standards people actually follow, we want to hear from you.

RESPONSIBILTIES- Build a safety culture people buy into: clear standards, consistent enforcement, and practical solutions developed with the people doing the work.

- Operationalize regulatory requirements. Turn OSHA general industry, construction, and environmental standards into clear, practical processes and expectations for every workstation and field task: hazard assessments, work instructions, visual controls, and training that builders can understand and follow without a binder.

- Own the EHS program and compliance, including recordkeeping, written programs, inspections, and regulatory filings.

- Maintain hazard assessment and PPE programs for the entire facility, ensuring safe operations grounded in actual requirements.

- Define and own environmental compliance, including hazardous materials and waste: chemical inventory and SDS management, generator status, waste streams, universal waste, and flammable storage. Partner with facilities to set clear ownership of permits and environmental obligations.

- Lead safety for high-risk work: working at heights on modules, overhead lifting and rigging, powered industrial trucks, lockout/tagout, machine guarding, and robotic and automated cell safety.

- Extend the program to field operations at project sites, including coordination with general contractors and other employers on shared sites.

- Own safety training and certification. Maintain the training matrix, run a train-the-trainer model with internal subject matter experts, and track completion so no one performs a task they aren't qualified for.

- Formalize stop-work authority and the escalation path behind it, so anyone on the floor or in the field can stop unsafe work without hesitation.

- Run incident and near-miss reporting, investigation, and corrective action, and close the loop so recurring issues become better standard work.

- Own emergency preparedness: emergency action plans, drills, fire prevention, and coordination with the local fire department and our insurance carrier's risk engineering team.

- Put EHS data into the tools the factory already uses, so inspections, corrective actions, and metrics are visible and acted on.

- Document the program well enough to replicate at future facilities.

30 / 90 / 1 Year OutcomesFirst 30 daysYou know the floor and the field. You've walked every station, reviewed the existing hazard assessments, written programs, and training records, and built trust with production leads. You've identified the top risks and biggest compliance gaps and have a prioritized plan to close them.

First 90 daysThe highest-risk gaps are closed or have scheduled fixes. Incident and near-miss reporting runs through a single system with tracked corrective actions. Training completion is measurable, a regular inspection cadence is in place, and environmental ownership is defined.

First yearEHS runs as a system, not a set of heroics. Stop-work authority is formal and used. Leading indicators are reported and acted on. Hazmat and training programs are audit-ready across factory and field, and the program is documented well enough to stand up at a new site.

QUALIFICATIONS- 4+ years of EHS experience with direct accountability for a site's safety and compliance program OR

- 4+ years managing externally regulated compliance programs in mature industries (military, nuclear, aviation, pharma/medical device, aerospace, or similar). This experience must also be augmented with additional time in scaling enterprises.

- Has built or substantially stood up a program in a new facility, a new organization, or a rapidly scaling operation.

- A track record of operationalizing regulations: you can take a standard written at a high level and turn it into something a crew member can act on during a shift.

- Working knowledge of OSHA general industry standards, or the ability to get there quickly; construction standards a plus.

- Experience with hazardous materials, chemical safety, or waste compliance.

- Experience managing safety for field or construction crews is a strong plus

- Comfortable running a program on digital tools and quick to adopt new software.

- Credible on the floor: you can set a standard, explain why it matters, and hold the line respectfully.

- Professional certification (CSP, ASP, CHST, CHMM, or similar) is a plus

- On-site in Billerica, MA, 5 days/week, with travel to field sites as needed
