POSITION DESCRIPTION

TITLE: Safety and Security Manager

RESPONSIBLE TO: Chief Operating Officer

RESPONSIBLE FOR: Life Safety and Security

JOB SUMMARY: Supervise and direct security operations. Responsible for ensuring all life safety equipment and systems are fully operational to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local agencies.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS, LICENSURE:

High School Diploma/GED with equivalent work experience in related field.

Certified as a Life Safety Specialist for Health care Facilities (CLSS-HC) or willing to obtain certification.

Leadership experience in safety and/or security is highly desirable.

Emergency Services Management experience is highly desirable

Minimum five years of management experience required. Healthcare background desired.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Support the mission and purposes of SVWC.

Support the Board of Trustees and Administration.

Present a professional, caring image.

Employment and annual Tuberculosis testing as required by Virginia State Licensure.

Must attend annual mandatory in-services required by the State Licensure and all other mandatory in-services and/or meetings required by other regulatory agencies and/or by SVWC.

Must promote positive language and culture change understanding for all older adults.

Follows and supports the policies and procedures established by SVWC.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

Oversee all operations and activities within the Security Department.

Serves as Chair of the Safety Committee. Prepare agenda for Safety Committee Meeting and ensure minutes are recorded.

Maintains good relations with residents and fellow employees.

Schedules and performs Annual Fire Alarm Inspection.

Coordinates Emergency Response for various needs including, but not limited to, ambulance escort, fire alarm repairs/issues, accident reports, assists Security Coordinator with planning/development/implementation of required emergency drills.

Monitors/maintains all fire/security alarm systems and logs.

Assists direct reports with interviewing, hiring, supervising, coaching, evaluating, disciplining and assists employees in setting and meeting performance goals.

Coordinates disaster and emergency planning and drills for the community, including, but not limited to, severe weather, active shooter, and workplace violence.

Participates/maintains/implements all required activities of VHASS (Virginia Healthcare Alerting and Status System.)

Supplies all necessary documentation for compliance with federal and state requirements including but not limited to the Department of Health, Social Services and OSHA regulations.

Responsible for implementation and optimization of safety, fire, surveillance, and nurse call systems.

Complete routine fire and safety drills.

Develops and controls operating and capital budgets.

Acts as a liaison with the State Fire Marshal’s office to ensure compliance with all relevant life safety codes; interprets the annual survey results and prepares the plan of correction if required.

Directs and manages regulatory inspection processes for facilities as required by local, state, and federal guidelines.

Develops, implements, and updates department specific policies to improve security policies, processes, and practices.

Develops fire, safety and OSHA training for all employees; ensures both formal and informal training is conducted annually. Conducts monthly and Quarterly Safety Trainings.

Identifies locations for pull cords and emergency cords where needed.

Evaluates facility for proper locations of security cameras and alarm systems.

Trains security staff on policies and proper use of security systems.

Maintains radios/cell phones.

Other duties as assigned.

AUTHORITY:

Within areas of responsibility, to make administrative decisions under the

guidelines of the policies and procedures of the facility. To hire, train, evaluate,

direct, discipline, and discharge those for whom responsible.

VISION

Must be able to visually identify and discern printed words on either typewritten pages or computer screen

Must be able to identify and differentiate colors.

Must have depth perception within normal ranges.

HEARING

Must be able to respond to spoken words and other auditory sounds including the ringing of telephone or beepers and monitors.

Must be able to respond and communicate orally by telephone.

LIFTING

Heavy lifting required (over 50 pounds occasionally from ground level to shoulder height.)

Must be able to push and maneuver carts/stretchers/space saver loaded with weights of 50 pounds.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT

Must be able to use, operate and interpret information from equipment in work area.

SPEECH

Must be able to verbally communicate in the English language directly and over the telephone and be understood.

RANGE OF MOTION

Must be able to climb (ladders and such) and be able to reach and balance from the ladders.

Must be able to kneel or squat for 20% of an 8-hour shift.

Must be able to walk continually for 2 hours.

Must be able to stand for 2 hours.

Must have mobility of all parts of the body, walking, bending, lifting, and reaching above head and use of hands.

Must be able to stand and/or mobilize by walking for 100% of an 8-hour shift.

WORKING CONDITIONS

May be required to work near or with voltages (up to 480 volts AC).

May have to work in hot (over 80 degrees F) or cold (under 10 degrees F) environments.

Must be able to work under stress.

Must be able to work overtime (and some employees work rotations or call schedules).

Must be able to work “on call.” (Some employees on occasion).

Must be able to deal with verbally and physically combative patients.

Must be able to work out of doors in varying types of weather.

Must be able to utilize or wear protective equipment or apparel in accordance with OSHA standards.

Must be able to work within confined spaces.

MENTAL CAPACITY

Must have mental capacity to fulfill the requirements of the job including problem solving, logic, communication, and numerical calculations.

Must be able to read and understand written instructions in English.

Accurate recall and memory.

Must be able to use sound judgment in making decisions and choices.

Ability to analyze numbers and make basic mathematical calculations.
