Senior Product Designer
About us
Emesent is a Brisbane-based world leader in autonomous LiDAR mapping and drone autonomy. Our flagship product, Hovermap, delivers autonomous LiDAR mapping in GPS-denied environments for the mining and defence sectors. Our newly launched GX1 brings high-performance handheld LiDAR to surveying and the built environment. Behind both sits a pipeline of future hardware products and a team that takes hard engineering problems from concept to the field.
The role
We're looking for an experienced Senior Product Designer to help build the next generation of our products. This is an onsite full time role.
Your main focus will be Aura Cloud, our new web platform for processing, measuring and sharing 3D point clouds. It's the product that needs the most design support right now. You'll take its work from research and strategy through to the detail of 3D interactions, and stay with it until we achieve the outcomes our customers need.
You'll also work flexibly across Aura Desktop (our processing software) and Commander (our field app) to create a consistent end-to-end experience.
It's a hands-on senior role in a small product team. You'll be the only product designer, so you'll judge how much design each piece of work needs, from a quick review to research and a coded prototype. You'll set the UX/UI direction, and grow the design system and the AI-enabled ways of working built on it, so product managers and engineers can design more of the work themselves.
Who you'll work with
You'll report to the Director of Product Management and work in the Aura Cloud product trio, with a product manager and an engineering lead. Day to day, you'll work with front-end and 3D rendering engineers, QA, and subject matter experts in surveying and mining. You'll also work with the Aura Desktop and Commander teams on shared workflows, and with the broader business when feedback comes in.
What you'll do
From day one
Frame the problem before designing the answer. Lead discovery for Aura Cloud, map how surveyors and miners actually work, and define the journeys, task flows and information architecture before the interaction detail.
Research and test with users. Run discovery interviews and usability tests, and bring what you learn into every design decision.
Design across product boundaries. Work with the Aura Desktop and Commander teams so workflows that cross products hold together for the customer.
Design 3D and spatial interactions. Shape how people measure, annotate, slice and move through point clouds on desktop and touch, working closely with the 3D rendering engineers.
Prototype in code. Test interactions with users in coded prototypes, built with AI tools, then use the prototype as the handover to engineering.
See designs through to outcomes. Take part in refinement and review front-end changes before they ship, then use product analytics and customer feedback to check the change worked for users.
Advocate for the user. Bring customer evidence into product decisions and influence stakeholders at every level.
As you grow into the role
Grow the design system. Build out the design system we're developing and the AI skills that apply it. The system covers how our products behave as well as how they look. Help product managers and engineers design within it using those AI skills, and refine the rules as you see where they work and where they don't.
Run research operations. Build the research program, from recruiting participants to keeping research insights up to date, and check what people say against product analytics.
What you'll bring
Must have
5+ years in product or UX design
A portfolio that shows end-to-end work, including the research and the decisions behind each design
Skill in usability testing, prototype testing and customer interviews
Strong interaction design and information architecture for complex, data-heavy workflows
Experience building or extending a design system that covers behaviour as well as visuals
Using product analytics and research together to make and measure design decisions
Practical use of AI tools in your own design work, for example exploring options, building prototypes or synthesising research, and judgement about where they fall short
Clear written and verbal communication, and confidence facilitating decisions across product, engineering and sales
Nice to have
Experience designing 3D or spatial interfaces: point cloud, CAD, GIS, BIM, simulation or games
Experience designing for in-field use in harsh or challenging environments
Writing design rules and guidance that AI tools can follow (we use Claude skills)
Familiarity with LiDAR data, or experience in the geospatial, surveying, mining or construction industries
The perks
9-day fortnight — every second Friday off.
Employee Share Option Plan (ESOP) — share in Emesent's success.
