Knowit Connectivity - Thesis Opportunities 2027
Knowit Sweden · Stockholm, Sweden
Turn your interest in embedded systems, industrial IoT, Edge AI, or cloud technology into a hands-on thesis project with support from experienced mentors in Stockholm.
At Knowit Connectivity, you can explore one of five thesis topics. Each topic offers a broad direction rather than a fixed specification. Together with your supervisors, you will define relevant research questions, boundaries, validation criteria, and feasible deliverables.
What will you work with?- Modular Low-Power Plug-and-Play Sensor Extension (Sensor HAT)
Design and validate a compact sensor extension for low-power embedded and industrial IoT platforms. The work may include PCB design, power management, sensor interfaces, energy profiling, Zephyr OS integration, and a preliminary Cyber Resilience Act assessment. ATEX requirements may be considered as design inputs, but formal certification and conformity assessments are outside the scope.
- Reusable Energy-Efficient Edge AI and TinyML Toolchain for Industrial Sensor Systems
Create a reusable process and toolchain for developing, optimizing, deploying, and evaluating Edge AI models on constrained devices. You will explore industrial sensor data, TinyML, fault detection, predictive maintenance, deployment automation, and energy-aware benchmarking across representative use cases.
- Modular Cloud Platform for Industrial IoT and Edge AI Lifecycle Management
Develop and validate a modular reference platform that connects industrial IoT devices with cloud services and supports the lifecycle of Edge AI models. The topic covers device and protocol integration, data pipelines, digital device representations, observability, security, portability, and a preliminary CRA gap analysis.
- Edge AI for Long-Term Sensor Degradation, Calibration, and Maintenance Prediction
Investigate how sensor drift, environmental stress, and long-term degradation can be detected and managed using Edge AI. The project may involve experimental design, sensor-health indicators, TinyML models, calibration prediction, and maintenance decision support. Accelerated experiments will provide controlled evidence rather than replace long-term field validation.
- Delta Firmware Updates for Large LoRaWAN Fleets with Mixed Firmware Versions
Explore how large LoRaWAN fleets can be updated efficiently when devices run different firmware versions. You will compare delta patches, full firmware images, multicast and unicast delivery, and patch chains based on device energy, RAM, flash use, and update time. The implementation will use ChirpStack and preferably Zephyr OS, with an existing bootloader such as MCUboot.
Have an idea of your own? We are open to proposals related to our areas of expertise and will assess whether we have the right conditions and mentoring capacity to support the project.
To succeed in this thesis, we believe you have:You are studying toward a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Embedded Systems Development, or a related field. Your interests and technical background should be relevant to the topic you select.
You also need to be comfortable defining and narrowing the project together with your academic supervisor and mentor at Knowit. If you plan to complete the thesis with another student, both of you must apply and mention each other in your applications.
What do you get with us?You will have access to our Stockholm office, where we believe you will benefit from spending a couple of days each week. A dedicated mentor from Knowit will support you with technical questions and challenges throughout the thesis.
You will also get to know our colleagues and other students through activities such as after-work events, workshops, and seminars.
