Version 1 is a trusted technology services and digital transformation partner, helping organisations innovate, modernise and maximise the value of their technology investments. Our expertise spans cloud, data & AI, enterprise applications, digital transformation and managed services, supporting leading public and private sector organisations.

At the heart of our Managed Services capability is the Service Reliability Group (SRG), delivering business-critical services across:

- Infrastructure & Database Managed Services

- Digital Workplace & Service Desk Operations

Through our ASPIRE Managed Services Framework, SRG combines AI, automation, technical expertise and continuous improvement to help customers improve service performance, resilience and business value.

Supporting customers across public sector, financial services and commercial organisations, our teams manage and optimise complex, business-critical technology environments while continually improving the services we deliver.

We’re looking for an experienced Senior Application Operations Engineer to take ownership of the performance, availability and continual improvement of business-critical digital services.

This is a hands-on role where you’ll combine application operations, observability and production support, using monitoring and performance data to identify issues before they impact users. You’ll work across modern AWS, Kubernetes and containerised environments, with a strong focus on Dynatrace, distributed tracing and DQL.

You’ll also play a key role in incident resolution, root cause analysis, deployments, releases and service improvements, working closely with development, Service Desk and customer teams.

What You’ll Be Doing:

- Own the day-to-day health, availability and performance of critical applications and services.

- Use Dynatrace, including Distributed Tracing and DQL, to monitor, investigate and optimise application performance.

- Build and improve monitoring dashboards, alerts and operational metrics.

- Proactively identify performance, availability, latency and capacity issues before they impact services.

- Lead technical incident triage, root cause analysis and post-incident reviews.

- Take ownership of complex production issues through to resolution or effective mitigation.

- Work across distributed systems, APIs, microservices and cloud-native applications.

- Partner with development teams throughout the release lifecycle, from defects and UAT through to deployment.

- Assess and coordinate changes, releases and migrations into live environments.

- Manage incidents, service requests and operational activity through Jira ITSM.

- Use trends and operational data to drive problem management, capacity planning and continual service improvement.

- Maintain clear technical documentation, operational procedures and knowledge articles.

- Build strong relationships with technical teams, users and customer stakeholders.

What We’re Looking For:

- Strong Application Performance Monitoring (APM) and observability experience across metrics, logs, traces, alerting and dashboards.

- Hands-on experience investigating production incidents and application performance issues.

- Strong understanding of distributed systems, microservices, APIs and web application architectures.

- Working knowledge of AWS, Kubernetes, containers and cloud-native hosting.

- Understanding of load balancing, auto-scaling and cloud networking.

- Experience with incident, problem, change and release management.

- Practical understanding of the SDLC and supporting applications through production releases.

- Ability to perform root cause analysis and turn technical findings into practical improvements.

- Strong stakeholder communication skills, including the ability to explain technical risks and recommendations to non-technical audiences.

- Experience working with ITIL, Agile and/or PRINCE2 environments.

- A proactive mindset with a strong focus on service reliability and continuous improvement.

Great to Have:

- Hands-on Dynatrace experience, particularly Distributed Tracing and Dynatrace Query Language (DQL).

- AWS experience across EKS, EC2, Lambda and related services.

- Oracle and PostgreSQL database knowledge.

- Exposure to Java, Angular and JavaScript applications.

- Jira Service Management experience.

- Experience integrating observability/APM tooling with ITSM platforms.

- Familiarity with Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) and operational excellence practices.
