Technical Writer (6 Month Contract)

VEIR · Woburn, Massachusetts, United States · onsite

WHY VEIR?

Founded in 2019 and headquartered in Woburn, Massachusetts, VEIR is a U.S.-based designer and manufacturer of category-defining superconducting power delivery systems built for the extreme energy demands of the AI era. By commercializing next-generation superconducting technology into deployable, real-world systems, VEIR delivers ~10× higher power density than conventional options, enabling “speed-to-power” where incremental optimization falls short. VEIR’s initial focus is AI data centers behind the meter, with solutions engineered for repeatable deployment through reference designs and integrated controls, designed to incorporate learnings as deployments scale.

The Role

We are seeking an experienced Technical Writer for a 6-month contract engagement to own the customer- and field-facing documentation for VEIR's superconducting power delivery systems, with the potential to convert to a full-time role at the end of the contract. You'll write and produce the large, safety-critical documents such as installation manuals, operation & maintenance manuals, commissioning procedures, and the supporting specifications, submittal packages, and training materials behind them. You'll work closely with our Engineering, Controls, Field Service, Solutions Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, and Product teams to turn CAD, P&IDs, single line diagrams, control philosophies, and engineering know-how into clear, accurate documentation for EPC engineers, electrical contractors, data center operators, and field technicians. During the contract, you'll help establish VEIR's technical documentation discipline and build the templates, style standards, and processes the company can use to scale.

Contract Details

- Engagement type: 6-month contract (potential for conversion based on business needs)

- Schedule: Full-time, 40 hours per week

- Compensation: Equivalent to $95,000 annual salary

- Benefits Eligible

- Location: On-Site/Hybrid

Key Responsibilities

- Own end-to-end authoring of VEIR's field related product documents, including Installation Manuals and Operation & Maintenance (O&M) Manuals, taking each from outline to 80% draft to released 100% version in step with our product development stage gates.

- Write and maintain supporting technical documents including Functional Specifications, Control Philosophy and Sequence of Operation documents, Guide Specifications, Preventive Maintenance schedules, Commissioning Test Plans, and Manufacturing Assembly Instructions.

- Assemble data center submittal packages and contribute technical content to datasheets, user guides, application notes, white papers, and training materials.

- Interview subject matter experts and work directly from engineering source material (CAD and general arrangement drawings, P&IDs, process flow diagrams, electrical single line diagrams, control panel schematics, BOMs, FMEAs) to produce accurate, complete procedures.

- Write clear, task-based procedures for installers, operators, and field technicians working with high-voltage power equipment, cryogenic (liquid nitrogen) cooling systems, and industrial control panels; apply consistent hazard and safety messaging (e.g., ANSI Z535, NFPA 70E).

- Partner with Engineering and Product Marketing to source and specify illustrations, renderings, diagrams, and labeling so visuals and text stay technically accurate and consistent.

- Run structured review and approval cycles with Engineering, Field Service, Quality, and Product; manage document version control, revision history, and change requests as designs evolve.

- Create and refine documentation templates, a style guide, and standards that support scalable documentation across product families, sites, and customers.

- Manage multiple large documents simultaneously; prioritize against product and customer deployment milestones and meet deadlines.

In the first 3 months you'll

- Learn VEIR's product architecture, superconducting cable and cryogenic cooling systems, controls, and how our systems are installed, commissioned, and maintained at customer sites

- Audit existing documentation against our product readiness standard; build a prioritized documentation plan with owners, reviewers, and due dates

- Establish the documentation toolchain, templates, style guide, and SME review workflow with Engineering, Solutions, Product, and Field Service

- Deliver approved outlines and first drafts of the Installation Manual and O&M Manual for our lead product

- Take feedback from multiple stakeholders and iterate rapidly; demonstrate flexibility and strong communication

In the first 6 months you'll

- Release the Installation Manual, O&M Manual and Guide Specification for our lead product, ready for customer deployment

- Complete supporting documents such as Functional Specifications, Control Philosophy / Sequence of Operation, Preventive Maintenance Manual, Spare Parts List, and Commissioning Plan

- Deliver a reusable submittal package and documentation set that can be adapted for new sites and product variants

- Document a sustainable documentation process (templates, review gates, version control, ownership) the team can run after the contract

- Establish yourself as the go-to expert on how VEIR documents its products for customers and the field

To be successful in this role

- 4+ years of professional technical writing experience, ideally at a hardware company in the industrial power, electrical equipment, energy, or industrial infrastructure space

- A portfolio of large, complex documents you authored, such as installation manuals, O&M manuals, commissioning or test procedures, and technical specifications

- Proven ability to read and work from engineering source material: mechanical and electrical drawings, single line diagrams, P&IDs, schematics, and BOMs

- Working knowledge of electrical power equipment and safety practices; experience writing safety-critical procedures with clear hazard messaging

- Strong command of structured, task-based writing, plain technical English, and document design (headings, tables, callouts, illustrations)

- Ability to communicate effectively with engineers and field technicians; skilled in asking clarifying questions and running efficient SME interviews

- Demonstrated project management capability; ability to drive multiple concurrent documents to release under deadline

- Collaborative mindset; experience working with cross-functional technical teams and iterating on feedback without becoming defensive

- Required software: Microsoft Office (Word, Excel); a professional authoring/layout tool (Adobe FrameMaker, InDesign, MadCap Flare, or equivalent); Adobe Acrobat

Nice to have (not required):

- Experience documenting switchgear, transformers, cables, power distribution, or utility/grid equipment

- Experience with cryogenic, thermal, or fluid process systems (liquid nitrogen, refrigeration, cooling loops)

- Familiarity with industrial control systems (PLC/HMI, alarm lists, interlocks, ISA-106/ISA-18.2 concepts)

- Experience writing for data center, EPC, or utility customers, including submittal packages and guide specifications

- Knowledge of documentation standards and compliance requirements (IEC/IEEE 82079-1, ANSI Z535, UL/CE/CSA documentation)

- Experience developing training materials or eLearning for field and operations teams
