Create your best future and join Westpac as a Principal Platform Engineer – OpenShift.

What’s the role?

The Principal Platform Engineer is expected to hold the highest level of technical expertise within the OBCS team, acting as the lead technical adviser and supporting the development of L3 engineers. The role will work in partnership with the SOM to define the platform architecture, technical direction and roadmap, while the SOM retains overall accountability for the architecture and service outcomes.

This role will be responsible for leading design reviews, establishing engineering standards and guardrails, driving automation and GitOps practices, and ensuring alignment with enterprise architecture, security, regulatory and reliability requirements. It will also drive platform consistency, resilience, capacity, cost efficiency and technical risk remediation, represent OBCS across key technical forums, manage technical engagement with vendors, and provide leadership during major incidents and recurring platform issues.

What do I need?

- Expert-level experience with Red Hat OpenShift 4.x and Kubernetes, including multi-cluster environments, ACM, OVN-Kubernetes networking, ODF storage, platform upgrades and lifecycle management.

- Strong platform architecture experience, with the ability to design highly available, resilient, scalable and secure enterprise container platforms across complex environments.

- Strong experience with GitOps and platform automation, including Argo CD, policy as code, CI/CD quality controls and reusable engineering patterns.

- Deep understanding of platform security, including RBAC, SCC, network segmentation, RHACS, HashiCorp Vault, vulnerability management and compliance controls.

- Experience applying SRE practices, including observability, SLOs, capacity planning, resilience, disaster recovery and FinOps principles.

- Strong technical leadership skills, with experience leading design decisions, major incident resolution, root-cause analysis and technical vendor engagement.

- Strong stakeholder management and communication skills, with the ability to influence engineering, architecture, security and senior stakeholders.

- Demonstrated experience mentoring senior engineers and uplifting engineering capability across teams.

- Desirable: RHCA, Red Hat Certified OpenShift Administrator (EX280), CKA or CKS certification. Demonstrated practical experience is valued over certification.
