Software Engineer II

Minecast · United States of America– Minnesota, Minneapolis, United States · hybrid

The Role

We are seeking a Software Engineer II to join our product development team working on Incydr, our Insider Risk Management product.

In this role, you will be a backend engineer owning critical services that process billions of events from customers around the world. You will design and deliver new services and APIs, evolve existing systems hosted on AWS, and take end-to-end ownership of the quality, operability, and reliability of the code you ship. You will partner with User Experience, Product Management, Information Experience, and other development teams to deliver features that help customers secure their collaboration culture.

This is a mid-level role for engineers who can work independently on moderately complex problems, make sound technical tradeoffs, and raise the quality of the team around them, not only through the code they write, but by mentoring others, improving how we build, and taking responsibility for production outcomes.

AI-First Engineering at Mimecast

Mimecast is an AI-first engineering organization. Our teams actively leverage AI-powered development tools across all facets of engineering, from code development to testing, documentation, and operations.

We're looking for engineers who don't just use AI tools but champion their adoption and establish new ways of working.

What You’ll Do:

- Own the design and implementation of features and services, independently and with teammates, considering monitoring, supportability, testability, and operational health built in from the start.

- Break down ambiguous product requirements into cohesive technical designs, identify gaps, contradictions, and tradeoffs, and drive those designs to completion.

- Write unit, integration, and service-level tests that give the team confidence to ship; raise the quality bar in review.

- Debug and troubleshoot across the Incydr technology stack, including production systems under load.

- Write infrastructure-as-code and own deployment, configuration, and lifecycle of services owned by the team.

- Own production issues and escalated customer questions for services you and the team operate; drive incidents to resolution and follow through on durable fixes.

- Participate in the team’s on-call rotation to support production services and respond to incidents as needed.

- Author design docs and technical proposals; review code and designs from others with an eye toward correctness, simplicity, and long-term maintainability.

- Mentor  teammates and other colleagues through pairing, thoughtful code review, and sharing context.

- Demo progress on team deliverables and communicate status, risks, and options clearly.

- Participate in story mapping and authoring; help the team sequence work so it can be delivered incrementally.

- Identify and drive process and technical improvements — not only for your own work, but for how the team builds and operates software.

- Lead design discussions and code reviews: ask hard questions, offer alternatives, and accept feedback.

- Learn about new technologies and practices, apply them where they matter, and share that knowledge with the team and the wider product development organization.

- Collaborate with teammates throughout the product development organization including product owners, UI/UX designers, QA analysts, technical writers, and customer champions — often as the primary engineering partner on a feature.

What You’ll Bring:

We're looking for engineers with established fundamentals and the aptitude to grow — we care as much about your ability to learn as your current skill set, and strong candidates will have experience across many of these areas without necessarily checking every box.

- 2-5 years of professional software engineering experience, with a focus on backend development.

- Production experience in Kotlin, the primary language of the team, or Java.

- Experience designing and building object-oriented systems, microservices, or multi-tier architectures.

- Experience with testing frameworks and a habit of using tests as part of how you design software.

- Demonstrated discipline and rigor delivering features that matter in production: observability, failure modes, and operational follow-through.

- Hands-on experience with continuous integration and deployment, including shipping and iterating services in a CI/CD pipeline.

- Experience with data repository technologies (ie: PostgreSQL, Elasticsearch) and an understanding of how data model and query choices affect reliability and performance.

- Familiarity with cloud infrastructure, ideally AWS, and with infrastructure-as-code.

- Experience with agile/lean development processes.

- Comfortable taking ownership of deliverables and seeing them through including the supportability, documentation, and operational readiness.

- Comfortable working in a collaborative environment, offering help, asking for help, and giving and receiving direct feedback.

- Comfortable working with non-technical staff and translating between product intent and technical reality.

- Passion for building systems that work well under real-world conditions.

- Able to communicate technical ideas, tradeoffs, and recommendations to peers and partners in written and verbal form.
