Software Engineer, Data
Generate · San Francisco, CA · hybrid
You are a builder who would rather fix the system than fix the same ticket twice. Generate's Data & Technology team runs the data platform the whole firm depends on, and we are increasingly replacing SaaS tools, spreadsheets, and manual processes with software we build ourselves. This role sits at the center of both: keeping our data pipelines healthy today and helping build the tools that come next. You're comfortable debugging code you didn't write, you enjoy working directly with the people who use what you build, and AI agents are already central to how you work.
What you will be doing at Generate Capital as a Software Engineer, Data:
- Own the day-to-day health of our data pipelines: Python ETL jobs, dbt models in Snowflake, Azure Data Factory pipelines, and the reports and system integrations that depend on them.
- Triage failures to root cause and fix them, from vendor schema changes and API rate limits to failed model tests and broken dependencies.
- Work directly with stakeholders across the business to understand the impact of an issue, keep them informed, and confirm the resolution actually solved their problem.
- Collaborate with the data team on fixes, code reviews, and releases.
- Treat every recurring ticket as a design problem, adding the alerting, validation, retries, and schema-change handling that stop a whole class of failure from coming back.
- Proactively find weaknesses in process, architecture, code quality, and security before they break, and drive the fix.
- Help define and enforce repeatable patterns for quality and security across deployment, logging, testing, and secrets handling.
- Help build, ship, and run internal applications that replace SaaS vendors, spreadsheets, and manual processes.
- Sit with business stakeholders, translate their problems into requirements and prototypes, and turn those into working software.
- Use AI coding agents as your default way of working, and share your workflows and tooling so the whole team gets faster.
Candidate qualifications & core characteristics:
- A demonstrated passion for, or commitment to, our mission.
- 2–3 years of professional software or data engineering experience. Exceptional new graduates with substantial shipped work will be considered.
- Strong Python and SQL.
- Experience building or operating software in a cloud environment. Azure is preferred; AWS or GCP experience is welcome.
- AI coding agents are already central to how you work, and you can walk us through your workflow in detail.
- Comfort debugging systems you didn't build, under time pressure, with incomplete information.
- Ability to translate business problems into technical solutions.
- Experience with Snowflake and dbt is a plus.
- Experience building internal tools or full-stack applications is a plus.
- Experience in financial services, energy, or another data-heavy environment is advantageous.
- Unimpeachable integrity and glowing references.
- Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, including empathy, intuition, and listening as well as strong writing and documentation skills.
- High level of self-awareness and humility, with excitement about confronting uncomfortable situations or new challenges.
- Intellectual agility, curiosity, and creativity; problem-solving is your default mode.
- Entrepreneurial spirit: flexibility, comfort with risk, recognition that “perfect can be the enemy of the good”.
