Structural Engineer
Engineer | Salt Lake City, Utah
In-office position with project-related field work and travel.
STRUCTURAL TECHNOLOGIES is seeking motivated early‑career engineers to join our nationwide assessment and repair engineering division out of our Salt Lake City Office. You will contribute across the investigate–design–build process, from field condition assessments and forensic investigations to repair design and construction support.
As an affiliate of the largest concrete specialty repair contractor in the United States, STRUCTURAL TECHNOLOGIES delivers investigate‑design‑build solutions primarily for industrial and power generation clients. Our teams develop innovative repair strategies, integrated products, and engineering support to extend the life and performance of critical infrastructure. Engineers here don’t just design - they see their solutions built, tested, and relied on in live operating facilities across the country.
In this role, you’ll apply and expand your engineering skills while shaping a career path aligned with your interests. We’re looking for engineers who want to understand why structures fail - not just design them - and who are eager to be accountable for real‑world performance. Supported by experienced mentors, you’ll gain hands‑on exposure across engineering and construction disciplines, including:
- Gain exposure to structural failure mechanisms;
- Evaluate distressed structures and determine root cause;
- Decide when repair vs. replacement is appropriate;
- Design repairs that must be constructible, durable, and safe in live industrial or Power Generation facilities
- Work side by side with construction teams—not just hand off drawings.
What you will do· Investigate existing conditions. Review records, assist with investigation planning and testing, and document deterioration, distress, dimensions, and site constraints. Help evaluate causes and develop solutions to repair, restore, or modify existing structures.
· Develop repair and strengthening designs. Perform assigned analyses and calculations, evaluate options, and prepare or coordinate drawings, specifications, and reports under senior engineering guidance. Consider structural performance, durability, constructability, and facility constraints.
· Support construction. Help verify field conditions, prepare responses to technical questions and requests for information, and assist with submittals and construction observations. Raise discrepancies and changed conditions with the responsible engineer and project team.
· Support clients and project development. Join client discussions, site walks, and solution development under senior/team guidance. Assist with scope descriptions, proposals, quantities, and engineering effort estimates alongside Sales, Estimating, and Operations.
· Deliver checked, well-documented work. Clarify requirements before starting; document assumptions, methods, limitations, and conclusions; check your own work; and resolve review comments. Follow applicable standards and obtain required documented review and approval before deliverables are released.
· Stay engaged with the team. Communicate progress and next steps, respond promptly to project needs, participate in relevant office meetings, and raise safety concerns, competing priorities, and scope, schedule, or budget issues early.
Required qualifications· Bachelor’s degree in civil or structural engineering and experience performing structural engineering work.
· For unlicensed candidates, completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering exam is required.
· Sound understanding of structural behavior, load paths, analysis, and concrete and steel engineering fundamentals.
· Ability to use relevant analysis/design software, such as SAP2000, RISA, or STAAD; experience with AutoCAD, Revit, or other drafting/BIM software; and ability to read construction drawings.
· Clear communication, careful documentation, organization, and willingness to ask questions, accept feedback, and collaborate.
· Ability to travel and work in the field locally and outside the Salt Lake City area, meet access requirements for assigned secure facilities, and work safely in industrial and other challenging environments.
Preferred qualifications· Professional Engineer license, or the ability to obtain a PE license within 12 months of hire.
· Master’s degree or other advanced degree relevant to structural engineering.
· Experience with forensic investigations, condition assessments, structural repair, or strengthening of existing structures.
· Experience supporting industrial facilities, construction activities, or structural repair projects.
