Role Overview

The Database Architect designs, implements, and optimizes the database architecture that powers Intelerad's medical imaging solutions. This strategic technical leader will be responsible for creating scalable, secure, and high-performance database systems that support our PACS, RIS, and enterprise imaging platforms serving healthcare providers and imaging centers globally. The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in database design, data modeling, and performance optimization within large-scale, mission-critical environments where system reliability directly impacts patient care. This role requires balancing technical excellence with business needs, collaborating across engineering, infrastructure, and product teams to ensure our data architecture supports both current operations and future growth in the healthcare IT sector.

Key Responsibilities

- Design and implement enterprise-wide database architectures for Intelerad's medical imaging platforms, ensuring scalability, performance, and reliability to support healthcare providers' diagnostic workflows and patient care delivery across multiple deployment models including on-premises, cloud, and hybrid environments.

- Develop and maintain comprehensive data models, schemas, and database documentation that align with healthcare interoperability standards including DICOM, HL7, and FHIR, while optimizing storage strategies for large-scale medical imaging data and ensuring efficient retrieval for clinical workflows.

- Establish and enforce database development standards, security protocols, and compliance frameworks to meet healthcare regulations including HIPAA, ensuring data integrity, confidentiality, and availability across all database systems while implementing robust backup, disaster recovery, and business continuity strategies.

- Lead database performance optimization initiatives through query tuning, indexing strategies, and capacity planning, proactively monitoring system health and implementing solutions that maintain sub-second response times critical for real-time diagnostic imaging access in clinical settings.

- Collaborate with software engineering, DevOps, and infrastructure teams to integrate database systems with application architecture, evaluate and recommend database technologies and platforms, and provide technical leadership on database migrations, upgrades, and modernization initiatives that support product innovation and operational excellence.

Qualifications & Experience

- 7+ years of experience in database architecture, design, and administration with demonstrated expertise in both relational databases (Oracle, PostgreSQL, SQL Server) and NoSQL databases (MongoDB, Cassandra), including hands-on experience with large-scale, high-availability database environments.

- Proven expertise in data modeling, database design patterns, normalization techniques, and creating logical and physical data models that support complex business requirements and high-volume transactional systems.

- Strong proficiency in database performance optimization, including query tuning, execution plan analysis, indexing strategies, and capacity planning for systems processing millions of transactions and managing petabyte-scale data storage.

- Extensive experience with cloud database platforms and services on AWS, Azure, or GCP, including experience with database migration strategies, hybrid architectures, and cloud-native database solutions.

- Deep understanding of database security best practices, encryption methodologies, access control mechanisms, and regulatory compliance requirements, with specific experience in healthcare data protection and HIPAA compliance.

- Demonstrated ability to lead technical initiatives, mentor development teams, and communicate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders across the organization.

Preferred Qualifications & Special Requirements

- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Software Engineering

- Experience with medical imaging systems architecture including PACS, RIS, VNA, or enterprise imaging platforms, and understanding of healthcare data standards such as DICOM, HL7, and FHIR.

- Hands-on experience with distributed database systems, data replication strategies, sharding, and multi-region database architectures that support global healthcare operations.

- Proficiency with ETL processes, data integration tools, and experience designing data pipelines that support business intelligence, analytics, and reporting requirements.

- Experience with Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform or CloudFormation for database provisioning and management.

- Knowledge of DevOps practices and CI/CD pipelines for database deployments, including experience with automated database testing, schema version control, and migration automation.

- Professional certifications such as AWS Certified Database Specialty, Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate, Oracle Certified Professional, or TOGAF certification.

- Experience working in Agile development environments and collaborating with cross-functional teams in a remote-first organizational structure.
