A Senior XR Engineer in the Division of Immersive Learning Design is pivotal in inventing, designing, optimizing, and analyzing augmented reality (AR) virtual reality (VR) and mixed reality (MR) solutions. The Division of Immersive Learning Design at Mayo Clinic is a pioneering team within the Department of Education, dedicated to transforming medical education through cutting-edge (AR), (VR), and (MR) technologies. By collaborating with physicians, scientists, medical illustrators, animators faculty, staff, students, and technical experts, the division creates immersive, user-centered learning experiences that enhance clinical skills, safety, and confidence across Mayo Clinic’s educational ecosystem. Using existing infrastructure that creates digital twins and 3D patient-specific models, the XR engineer will seamlessly integrate them into XR platforms for surgical planning, medical education, research, and the development of XR-enabled medical devices. The candidate must be able to work across multidisciplinary teams and have a passion for learning new disciplines while bringing their XR passion and expertise to the team. A core component of the job is the ability to lead XR teams of varied healthcare providers and educators, translating their medical knowledge into robust software solutions that may be deployed in VR, AR, MR, mobile devices, web, and desktops independent of operating systems and changing XR vendor hardware solutions. The candidate will design experiences, interactions, and applications that support effective collaboration within Immersive environments.

The right candidate has experience and proficiency in programming languages, including Python, C++, C#, and or Java, and a firm understanding of leading XR development platforms, including Unity and Unreal Engine. Knowledge of software development methodologies, 3D modeling, computer graphics, optical tracking, and the ability to write clean, readable code and debug problems that span other software development kits is a plus. While familiarity with anatomy, healthcare industry standards, and regulatory requirements are benefits, they are optional to fill this role.

The candidate will serve as a Technical Lead for Division projects and clinical sponsors. Provides technical and work direction to project team members and completes tasks promptly. Mentors and coaches other staff as required. Designs and develops architectures of industry-related engineering systems, applying knowledge of complex principles, theories, concepts, tools, and techniques to design challenges. Demonstrate and define immersive interaction standards and develop new processes for visualizing content using immersive technology. Stay current with immersive technology trends. Develop engineering and technical documentation. Develop and maintain sponsor relationships and expand/cross-pollinate uses within new applications. Lead in evaluating new technologies and capital equipment. Demonstrated ability to communicate and present to team members effectively.

This position will require on-site presence with the flexibility to work from home as needed throughout the week once oriented to the role.
