Game Designer (Gameplay & Combat)
Gameloft · Brisbane, QLD, Australia · hybrid
Gameloft is looking for a talented Game Designer to join our team and help bring the action of our upcoming projects to life!
In this role, you will focus on the intersection of gameplay systems and combat execution. Working closely with our Senior Designers, you will help translate high-level visions into polished, playable features. From refining the feel of player movement to implementing challenging combat encounters in the open world, you will be a key driver in ensuring the game is responsive, balanced, and fun. We are looking for a "builder" mindset - someone who loves the process of iterating in-engine to find the perfect feel.
What it means on a daily basis
- Support Combat Development: Collaborate with the feature owners and Senior Designers to implement and refine core combat mechanics, helping to tune attack/defense loops and enemy AI behaviors.
- Execute Gameplay Features: Assist in the design and implementation of various gameplay systems, ensuring a cohesive experience across movement, interaction, and core loops.
- Design & Place Encounters: Create and script engaging combat encounters, working with Level Designers to strategically place them in the world to ensure a balanced pace of action.
- Hands-on Implementation: Use Unreal Engine (Tools & Blueprints) to prototype features and implement design changes directly into the game, reducing the gap between concept and playability.
- Refine "Game Feel": Iterate on the precision and polish of gameplay - tuning variables like timing, feedback, and responsiveness to ensure the action feels satisfying.
- Balance & Tune: Assist in the balancing of combat values and gameplay systems, utilizing playtest data and feedback to make iterative improvements.
- Cross-Discipline Collaboration: Work with Animators and Engineers to ensure that the mechanical implementation of gameplay and combat aligns with the visual and technical requirements.
- Document Technical Work: Maintain clear documentation for the features you implement, ensuring the rest of the team understands how systems are functioning.
What success will look like
Success in this role will mean delivering engaging, polished, and well-balanced gameplay and combat features that enhance the overall player experience. The designer will effectively implement and iterate on gameplay systems using Unreal Engine and Blueprints, refine combat mechanics and enemy behaviours, and create encounters that support strong pacing and challenge. They will demonstrate a strong understanding of game feel, respond constructively to playtesting and feedback, collaborate effectively with senior designers and cross-disciplinary teams, and consistently deliver reliable, well-documented features that align with the project’s creative and technical goals.
