Job Description
The Senior Geotechnical Engineer leads geotechnical investigations, analysis, and reporting for the Burlington, NJ sector and serves as geotechnical engineer of record for assigned projects. The role owns projects from proposal through final report: scoping and pricing subsurface programs, directing drilling subcontractors and field staff, performing engineering analyses, and delivering signed and sealed geotechnical reports to public and private clients across New Jersey and the greater Philadelphia market. Senior-level client contact and mentoring of junior engineers and field technicians are core to the role
Core Responsibilities
- Plan, scope, and price subsurface investigation programs (borings, test pits, CPT, geophysics) and manage drilling subcontractors
- Perform geotechnical analyses: bearing capacity, settlement, slope stability, lateral earth pressures, deep foundations, pavement design, seismic site class
- Prepare and seal geotechnical reports, letters, and construction-phase recommendations as engineer of record
- Direct laboratory soils testing programs (AASHTO/ASTM) and interpret results
- Provide construction-phase geotechnical support: footing bottoms, fill acceptance, pile observation, dewatering/excavation review
- Serve as senior client contact; support proposals, BD, and seller-doer growth of the geotechnical practice
- Mentor and provide technical oversight to staff engineers and field technicians
- Coordinate with Atlas CMT, environmental, and structural teams on integrated scopes
You’ll thrive here if you have
- B.S. in Civil Engineering with geotechnical emphasis
- New Jersey P.E. license (or ability to obtain by comity within 6 months); Pennsylvania P.E. a plus
- 8+ years of progressive geotechnical consulting experience, including project management and report sealing
- Valid driver's license; ability to visit active construction sites
- Proficiency with geotechnical analysis software (e.g., Slide/SLOPE-W, LPILE, APILE/Group, Settle3, gINT or similar logging software)
- Working knowledge of AASHTO, ASTM, NJDOT and PennDOT geotechnical standards, IBC Chapter 18, and NJ UCC
- Familiarity with NJDEP and NJ One Call requirements for subsurface work
- Experience with deep foundation design and construction observation preferred
- Entrepreneurial - interested in growing the geotechnical practice, not just staffing it
- Self-directed and dependable - comfortable owning projects end-to-end
- Strong, clear technical writing and client communication
- Collaborative; invested in developing junior staff
- Required: P.E. (NJ)
- Desired: ASCE / Geo-Institute, DFI, NJSPE; NICET or ICC soils certification a plus
