The CNO will provide executive leadership and strategic direction for nursing, with accountability for the quality and delivery of nursing services across the medical center. This leader will champion patient-centered, evidence-based care while advancing quality, safety, caregiver engagement, operational effectiveness and the professional practice of nursing.

This is an opportunity for an experienced nursing executive to lead within a large, complex acute care environment and serve as a highly visible voice for nursing. The ideal leader will combine vision, relationships, operational excellence, accountability and courage, with the ability to make nursing integral to the success of the broader organization.

About Providence St. Vincent Medical Center

Providence St. Vincent Medical Center is a 539-bed tertiary care hospital located on the west side of the Portland metropolitan area and serves as one of Providence Oregon’s flagship medical centers. The campus is home to nationally recognized programs in cardiovascular care, neurosciences, cancer, digestive health, women’s and children’s services, and advanced surgical care, creating a dynamic and inspiring environment for nursing leadership.

Nursing excellence is deeply embedded in the culture at St. Vincent. The medical center was the first hospital in Oregon to achieve Magnet Recognition and has earned six consecutive Magnet designations, becoming the 12th hospital in the world to achieve that distinction.

What You Will Lead

As CNO, you will:

- Set and communicate a compelling vision for nursing and patient care, connecting nursing priorities with organizational goals around quality, finance, growth, access, workforce and patient experience.

- Champion professional nursing practice, shared governance, evidence-based practice, nursing autonomy and clinical excellence, while bringing extensive knowledge of Magnet principles and standards.

- Advance quality, patient safety and High Reliability Organization principles, ensuring the voice and needs of patients remain central to clinical decision-making.

- Lead effectively through transformation and organizational change, creating alignment and sustaining momentum.

- Build a culture of accountability, establishing clear expectations and empowering leaders and caregivers to deliver measurable results.

- Apply strong operational and financial acumen to staffing, productivity, throughput, labor costs, quality and clinical operations.

- Build and develop a strong nursing leadership pipeline, coaching leaders to think strategically and independently while attracting and retaining exceptional talent from frontline nursing through management.

- Partner closely with physicians, executives and other clinical and operational leaders to advance organizational strategy and clinical excellence.

- Develop productive, collaborative labor relationships.

- Lead effectively in a highly matrixed organization, building alignment and advancing shared priorities across local, regional and system partners.

- Maintain a visible presence throughout the organization, regularly engaging and inspiring frontline caregivers.

The Leader We Are Seeking

The successful candidate will be a seasoned nursing executive who brings credibility from the bedside to the executive suite.

We are looking for a leader who is:

Authentic and relational.

A leader who builds genuine trust with nurses, physicians, executives, boards and community partners and has the emotional intelligence to adapt while remaining authentic.

Calm, confident and courageous.

Someone who remains composed under pressure, communicates openly and is willing to address difficult issues while protecting the interests of patients, caregivers and the organization.

A strategic operator.

An executive who can translate vision into measurable execution and understands the interconnected nature of clinical quality, workforce, operations and financial performance.

A transformational change leader.

A leader with demonstrated experience guiding significant, large-scale change such as organizational transformation, new services, innovation, new facilities or centers of excellence.

An advocate for the profession of nursing.

Someone who views nursing as a profession, not simply a workforce, and actively advances professional governance, evidence-based practice, autonomy and clinical excellence.

A developer of people.

A talent steward who develops future leaders, coaches for independence and builds sustainable leadership and clinical talent pipelines.

A collaborative executive partner.

The next CNO will bring that Mission to life through visible, authentic leadership and a steadfast commitment to patients, caregivers, the nursing profession and the communities Providence serves.

This is more than an opportunity to lead nursing. It is an opportunity to shape the future of nursing practice and patient care at one of Providence's flagship medical centers.
