Graduate Engineering Intern - Electronics

Employer not yet confirmed · Rochester, Minnesota, United States

This graduate internship is a full-time position Summer-Fall 2027 (May or June through December) on site in Rochester, Minnesota.

The primary purpose of the Graduate Engineer Internship is to provide a graduate student with relevant engineering experiences. One or more mentors will be assigned to the intern to provide instruction, guidance and to assess performance. The intern is responsible for learning the procedures and processes of the Division of Engineering and the assigned work unit. In addition, the intern will be given selected engineering work assignments to reinforce the learning experience and to provide benefit to the work unit. The engineering assignments may include designing components, developing a project strategy, gathering user needs, requirements and specifications, evaluating commercial components, assembling prototype systems, performing design verification and design validation, troubleshooting, and participating in design reviews.

This internship will support electrical engineering development for physiological sensing, monitoring and therapeutic technologies, with opportunities to contribute to low-power, battery-powered, and wirelessly connected medical device prototypes. The intern will work on selected components or subsystems within a broader modular platform, under the guidance of experienced engineers. Assignments will be matched to the intern’s preparation, learning objectives, and project needs. Assignments may include may include:

- Assist with analog and digital circuit design, simulation, schematic capture, PCB layout, and component evaluation.

- Assemble, bring up, debug, and test electronic prototypes; document measurements and participate in design reviews.

- Support sensor interfaces, signal acquisition, power-management circuits, or wireless-module integration.

- Support integration of electronics hardware, firmware (including HDL for FPGAs) and software.

- Help characterize signal quality, power consumption, battery-powered operating modes, or wireless performance, as appropriate to the assignment.

The incumbent must have received a bachelor of science in electrical engineering from an accredited college or university and be enrolled in or intending to enroll in a graduate degree program in an Electrical or Biomedical Engineering degree granting program.

The preferred candidate will have education, experience, or interest in one or more of the following areas. Relevant coursework, laboratory work, research, capstone projects, and personal engineering projects are appropriate evidence; prior professional experience is not required.

Additional Qualifications

- Analog and digital circuit and system design, circuit simulation, schematic capture, and PCB layout.

- Sensor interfaces or physiological signal acquisition.

- Signal processing coursework or experience.

- Standard laboratory electronic instruments including oscilloscopes, multimeters, logic analyzers and spectrum analyzers; prototype assembly and debugging.

- Low-power or battery-powered electronics

- RF wireless communications coursework or experience.

- Embedded firmware or FPGA development, hardware/software integration.

- Working in a team environment and demonstrating strong analytical and communication skills.

Optional Areas of Interest

Exposure to AI/ML, wireless power transfer, implantable or other medical devices, therapeutic electronics, medical device safety standards, EMC, or regulatory and agency approval activities is welcome, but not required. The intern is not expected to have experience in all of these areas.
