Electrical & Controls Engineer
General Matter · Los Angeles, CA · onsite
About the Company
General Matter enriches uranium.
We are designing, building, and operating the world’s lowest-cost enrichment services, here in the US.
In the process, we are restoring America’s ability to produce nuclear fuel to power AI, advanced manufacturing and critical industries our country relies on to remain competitive.
Fuel drives the cost of advanced reactor electricity production, and enrichment drives the cost of the fuel that advanced reactors consume. Reliable, low-cost enrichment is the catalyst for the nuclear Renaissance now under way.
Our mission is to make nuclear not only the cleanest and safest source of baseload power, but also the most affordable. We believe abundant nuclear energy will lead to a post-scarcity society.
We were incubated inside Founders Fund, like Anduril and Palantir before us, and are backed by over a dozen of the world's top venture capital firms.
Our lean, world-class team of engineers and operators is applying a first-principles approach to solving the problem of nuclear fuel production.
We are a mission-driven company with a culture of urgency, accountability, and transparency.
Help us build a high-energy society by making the cleanest, safest form of baseload energy the most affordable.
About the Role
As an Electrical & Controls Engineer on the I&C team, you'll take systems from schematic to commissioning. You'll design the panels and wiring, help choose the instrumentation, bring everything up on the floor, and write the PLC and HMI code that runs it. You'll also help set the electrical standards and architecture we scale on. This role comes with real autonomy and real responsibility for quality.
Responsibilities
- Design, document, and integrate electrical and controls systems for test setups, prototypes, and plant systems, adapting across projects as priorities shift.
- Produce high-quality electrical schematics, control panel designs, wiring diagrams, harness documentation, and I/O documentation using professional ECAD tools (e.g., EPLAN Electric P8).
- Contribute to electrical design standards, templates, and part libraries to improve consistency across the team.
- Contribute to PLC and HMI development and troubleshooting in structured text (Beckhoff TwinCAT, Siemens TIA Portal) for test stands and plant systems, including I/O configuration, interlocks, and sequence logic.
- Perform general electrical and controls work, including instrument integration, sensor and actuator wiring, loop checks, I/O checkout, and field troubleshooting.
- Partner with other engineering teams on instrumentation and sensor selection, providing electrical and controls input and owning selection on some systems.
- Design control panel schematics and layouts, including UL508A-style panels and safety-instrumented systems where required.
- Support build, wiring, integration, testing, and commissioning of electrical systems across R&D and facility deployments.
- Collaborate with the controls software and test teams to help define system architecture, I/O, and control interfaces between electrical hardware and PLC software.
- Develop technical documentation and specifications for internal use, vendors, and contractors.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related discipline.
- 5+ years of electrical and controls engineering experience for industrial control systems, including hands-on electrical design.
- Demonstrated proficiency with a professional ECAD tool (e.g., EPLAN, AutoCAD Electrical, SolidWorks Electrical) for schematics, control panel design, wiring diagrams, and electrical documentation.
- Startup or fast-paced, high-ownership engineering experience — comfort with ambiguity, rapid iteration, and loosely-defined scope.
- Working knowledge of industrial instrumentation, control panel design, and industrial communications protocols (e.g., EtherCAT, EtherNet/IP, CAN bus).
- Ability to perform trade studies, reason from first principles, and make sound engineering decisions with incomplete information.
- Excellent problem-solving and communication skills for cross-functional collaboration.
- Evidence of exceptional ability (prior projects, portfolio of work, completed products, etc.).
Preferred Skills and Experience
- Experience designing electrical systems for test stands, automated test equipment, or prototype hardware.
- Control panel design experience, including UL508A panels and SIL-rated safety systems.
- Familiarity with AC power systems, including breakers, relays, transformers, and three-phase power.
- Hands-on experience building, wiring, or commissioning industrial electrical systems.
- PLC programming experience in structured text (IEC 61131-3) on Beckhoff TwinCAT and/or Siemens TIA Portal.
- Proficiency with EPLAN Electric P8, including Pro Panel, Cable proD, and/or Harness proD.
- Experience selecting and specifying process instrumentation (e.g., pressure, temperature, flow, level, vacuum).
- Experience with HMI/SCADA development, data acquisition systems, or scripting (e.g., Python) for test automation.
Additional Requirements
- Ability to work extended hours and weekends as necessary
- Commit to a 100% in office role
- Currently a US Citizen with capability to obtain and maintain a US DOE-Q clearance
