Mechanical Design Engineer II

MatrixSpace · Burlington, MA · onsite

Help design reliable mechanical systems for radar and multi-sensor products, taking them from concept development through detailed design, prototyping, testing, and production.

MatrixSpace develops AI-enabled radar and sensing systems that help people understand what's happening in the world around them. By combining advanced radar, edge computing, and AI, we deliver situational awareness in environments where traditional sensing solutions struggle.

We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer II to design and develop mechanical components and electro-mechanical assemblies for radar and multi-sensor hardware. You’ll work closely with mechanical, electrical, firmware, and systems engineers to develop concepts, create detailed designs, validate prototypes, and support the transition into production.

This is a hands-on individual contributor role for an engineer with professional product-development experience who can take ownership of assigned design work, apply sound engineering judgment, and execute with guidance from senior engineers.

What You'll Do

- Design and develop mechanical components and electro-mechanical assemblies using SolidWorks or similar CAD tools.

- Contribute throughout the product lifecycle, from concept development and detailed design through fabrication, integration, testing, and production.

- Create and maintain 3D models, assemblies, and manufacturing drawings for machined parts, sheet metal, and other mechanical components.

- Apply appropriate materials, tolerances, fasteners, and manufacturing methods to develop practical, reliable designs.

- Participate in design reviews and incorporate feedback on performance, manufacturability, assembly, and serviceability.

- Build and test prototypes, evaluate results, and refine designs to resolve mechanical and system-integration issues.

- Collaborate with suppliers and manufacturing partners to address fabrication and assembly questions and support the transition from prototype builds into production.

- Develop and maintain engineering documentation, including bills of materials, assembly procedures, build instructions, and design revisions.

- Support lab and field testing, customer demonstrations, and field deployments, including limited travel to our Hoffman Estates, Illinois site.

What We're Looking For

You have a solid foundation in mechanical design and experience turning engineering concepts into working hardware. You’re comfortable moving between CAD, engineering drawings, hands-on prototyping, and testing. You understand how design decisions affect manufacturing and assembly, and you work effectively across engineering disciplines.

This position requires working directly or indirectly with the US Government in restricted environments. Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States without employer sponsorship and may be required to obtain and maintain a U.S. government security clearance in the future.

Required

- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field, or equivalent practical experience/background.

- 4–6 years of relevant professional experience in mechanical design and hardware development.

- Experience using 3D CAD tools, with SolidWorks preferred, to create parts, assemblies, and mechanical drawings.

- Experience contributing to mechanical designs from concept development through prototype fabrication and testing.

- Working knowledge of mechanical tolerances, materials, fasteners, manufacturing processes, and assembly practices.

- Experience building, testing, and troubleshooting physical hardware in a product-development environment.

- Familiarity with designing components for machining, sheet metal fabrication, or other common manufacturing methods.

- Ability to document design decisions, communicate technical issues, and collaborate with engineers and manufacturing partners.

- Experience applying Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) and performing tolerance stackups. Per ASME Y14.5

Someone Who Will Thrive in This Role

- Enjoys both mechanical design and hands-on work with physical hardware.

- Approaches engineering problems with practical judgment and curiosity.

- Uses testing and feedback to improve designs.

- Takes ownership of assigned work and seeks guidance when needed.

- Collaborates effectively across mechanical, electrical, firmware, and systems engineering.

- Can manage multiple design and build priorities while maintaining clear documentation and an organized, safe workspace.

Bonus Points

- Experience supporting production builds or resolving manufacturing issues with suppliers or contract manufacturers.

- Experience with ruggedized electronics, radar, sensing systems, or other integrated electro-mechanical products.

- Experience with thermal, structural, shock, or vibration analysis and testing.

- Familiarity with 3D printing and other rapid-prototyping methods.

- Basic electro-mechanical assembly and troubleshooting skills, including wiring, soldering, and use of diagnostic tools.

You’ll help turn MatrixSpace sensing technology into reliable physical products that perform in real-world environments. Your work will shape mechanical designs from the earliest concepts through production and field use. If that sounds exciting, we’d love to hear from you.
