Senior Data Engineer

AC3 · Melbourne VIC · hybrid

Salary: Package Range: $185,000 - $195,000

We are partnering with an established healthcare provider to recruit an experienced Senior Data Engineer to join their Melbourne-based technology team.

This is a hands-on senior role for someone who is genuinely strong across Microsoft SQL Server, database administration and development, enterprise data warehousing, ETL/SSIS and Power BI.

You'll take ownership across the existing data environment while also playing an important role in its future modernisation, including a planned SQL Server 2019 to SQL Server 2025 upgrade and the evaluation and phased adoption of Microsoft Fabric.

What you'll be doing

- Administer, maintain, secure and optimise Microsoft SQL Server environments

- Develop and optimise complex SQL, stored procedures, functions, views and database objects

- Design and maintain enterprise data warehouse solutions and dimensional data models

- Build and support ETL/ELT pipelines, including advanced SSIS development

- Develop and optimise Power BI semantic models, datasets, reports and dashboards

- Support integrations across APIs, XML/JSON and business systems

- Troubleshoot complex database, data warehouse and reporting issues

- Support SQL Server upgrades, migrations and broader data-platform modernisation

- Apply strong data security, privacy, governance and quality practices

The role covers the full data lifecycle rather than being purely a reporting or BI position.

What we're looking for

You will ideally have 5+ years' experience as a Senior Data Engineer, Database Administrator, Data Warehouse Developer or in a similar hands-on role, with:

- Expert Microsoft SQL Server administration

- Advanced SQL development, query tuning, indexing and performance optimisation

- Strong enterprise Data Warehouse experience

- Advanced SSIS / ETL / ELT experience

- Strong Power BI development skills

- Experience supporting business-critical production environments

- Experience with major SQL Server upgrades or migrations

- Practical experience with PowerShell and XML/API-based integrations

- Strong troubleshooting, documentation and stakeholder communication skills

Exposure to Microsoft Fabric, Azure data technologies or broader Microsoft data-platform modernisation will be highly regarded.

Experience within healthcare, private health insurance, hospitals or health data would be a strong advantage, but is not essential. Candidates coming from other complex, highly regulated or data-intensive environments are encouraged to apply.

Why consider this opportunity?

This is an opportunity to step into a genuinely senior, hands-on position where you can influence the organisation's data environment rather than simply maintain one component of it. You'll work across SQL Server, Data Warehouse, integration and Power BI, while contributing to a significant technology modernisation roadmap.
