Your Opportunity
We are seeking a Professional Engineer who has built the majority of their career around hydraulic and hydrologic modelling and wants to continue developing as a technical specialist in urban water systems. The successful candidate will have a strong interest in wastewater and stormwater collection systems, potable water distribution systems, or a combination of these areas. This is a modelling-focused role for someone who enjoys developing, calibrating, troubleshooting, and applying models to solve practical infrastructure planning and operational challenges.
Our team collaborates on projects across Canada and North America for municipal, regional, and other public- and private-sector clients. As part of the Urban Water Resources Water Delivery Team, you will contribute to the assessment and management of sanitary, stormwater, combined sewer, drainage, and water distribution systems. You will work with experienced modellers and project leaders, provide specialized modelling support to teams across the company, and take on increasing responsibility for technical delivery, quality, and mentorship while remaining actively involved in hands-on modelling.
Your Key Responsibilities
- Lead and contribute to hydraulic and hydrologic modelling assignments for wastewater, stormwater, combined sewer, drainage, and potable water systems.
- Develop, calibrate, validate, troubleshoot, maintain, and document hydraulic models using monitoring, GIS, SCADA, rainfall, operational, and other available system data.
- Assess existing-system capacity, performance, level of service, wet-weather response, flood risk, servicing constraints, and operational issues.
- Develop and evaluate future growth, climate, operational, infrastructure, and remedial scenarios to support master planning, servicing studies, capital planning, and system optimization.
- Interpret model results, identify limitations and uncertainties, and translate technical findings into practical recommendations for clients and project teams.
- Prepare clear technical reports, memoranda, design briefs, presentations, figures, and model documentation.
- Plan or support field investigations and monitoring programs required for model development and calibration.
- Coordinate with project managers, discipline leads, GIS and data specialists, and junior staff to deliver high-quality work on schedule and within budget.
- Provide technical guidance, model review, and mentorship to developing modellers, including quality assurance and quality control of model inputs, assumptions, and outputs.
- Support proposals, work planning, level-of-effort estimates, and client discussions for modelling and urban water assignments.
Your Capabilities and Credentials
- Strong understanding of hydraulic and hydrologic principles as they apply to urban drainage, collection, and/or water distribution systems.
- Demonstrated experience developing, calibrating, validating, troubleshooting, and interpreting hydraulic models.
- Strong experience with at least one major modelling platform, such as InfoWorks ICM, PCSWMM, InfoSWMM, WaterGEMS, or WaterCAD. Experience with MIKE+, InfoWater, or other comparable platforms is also valued.
- Experience managing, analyzing, and interpreting large datasets, including flow, level, rainfall, SCADA, operational, and spatial data.
- Experience using GIS to support model development, results interpretation, mapping, and communication. AutoCAD experience is an asset.
- Ability to critically assess model inputs, assumptions, calibration quality, results, limitations, and fitness for purpose.
- Experience preparing clear, concise technical reports and presenting complex modelling results to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Commitment to client service, technical quality, collaboration, and timely delivery.
- Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Proficiency with common Microsoft 365 applications, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Teams.
- Experience supporting proposals, scopes, budgets, and schedules is an asset.
- Complementary skill sets in applying optimization routines, scripting, automation tools, or AI agents to improve individual productivity and project efficiency, as well as climate change, asset management, river or coastal engineering, data visualization, or database management, are assets.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in civil, water resources, environmental, or a related engineering discipline.
- Registered as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in a Canadian province, or eligible for registration through interprovincial mobility.
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant consulting, municipal, or utility experience, with the majority of that experience focused on hydraulic and hydrologic modelling.
- A record of progressively responsible technical work, including responsibility for model development, analysis, documentation, and delivery.
Typical office environment working with computers and remaining seated for long periods of time. Hybrid work arrangement available.
