Software Engineer II - Remote Assistance

Uber · Seattle, Washington, United States

About the role and team

Uber’s Autonomous Mobility & Delivery (AM&D) team builds technology that brings autonomous vehicles onto Uber’s platform. Our Remote Assistance (RA) systems give human operators the information and tools to understand vehicle behavior and support autonomous operations in real time.

As a Full-Stack Engineer, you will build web applications and backend services that support remote assistance workflows. You will own the development and delivery of features across the stack, working with engineering, product, design, and operations to translate requirements into reliable, intuitive software. This is a hands-on role spanning feature design, implementation, testing, deployment, and production support.

What you’ll do

- Build and maintain full-stack features for remote assistance operators, including interactive web interfaces, backend services, and APIs that bring together vehicle information and operator workflows.

- Contribute to technical designs, document implementation decisions, and evaluate tradeoffs between performance, reliability, and maintainability. Reuse and extend existing systems where appropriate.

- Work with product managers, designers, and operations stakeholders to understand user needs, clarify feature requirements, and improve the operator experience.

- Deliver features spanning frontend and backend components, coordinating dependencies with other engineers and integrating with platform services and vehicle data.

- Write high-quality, well-tested code. Establish monitoring and alerting for the software you build, participate in on-call rotations, and independently troubleshoot production issues.

- Improve the performance and maintainability of your software by addressing bottlenecks, reducing code duplication, and closing gaps in test coverage.

- Participate in code and design reviews, contribute technical documentation and operational runbooks, and help onboard new team members.

Basic Qualifications

- A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

- 3+ years of software engineering experience building and shipping production web applications and backend services.

- Proficiency in JavaScript or TypeScript, HTML, CSS, and a modern frontend framework such as React.

- Experience developing backend services and APIs, with proficiency in at least one backend programming language.

- Strong foundations in data structures, algorithms, and software design, with the ability to implement, test, and debug features across the application stack.

Preferred Qualifications

- Experience building real-time web applications, operational dashboards, map-based interfaces, or data visualizations.

- Familiarity with streaming data, distributed systems, or synchronizing application state between frontend and backend.

- Experience investigating and improving browser performance, API latency, or backend service reliability.

- Experience collaborating with product and design to improve usability based on user feedback.

- Familiarity with autonomous vehicles, robotics, telemetry, or remote assistance systems. Prior domain experience is helpful but not required.

- AV specific industry knowledge

- Remote assistance specific knowledge
