Senior Embedded Software Engineer, Medical Devices Location: Melbourne (South-East suburbs), hybrid

Type: Contractor, full-time

About the company An established Australian product development and engineering firm with more than 20 years of experience bringing complex technology to market. The team builds products for medical, industrial and defence clients in regulated environments where safety and reliability are critical.

Their medical work covers Class II and Class III devices, including advanced cardiovascular technology, medical robotics and AI-enabled treatment platforms. You’ll work with electronics, mechanical, software, human factors and regulatory specialists on products that directly affect patient outcomes.

The role A senior, hands-on role designing and building embedded software for life-critical medical devices, from hardware bring-up through to the user interface. You’ll shape software architecture, set engineering standards and mentor others, while staying close to the code.

What you’ll do - Architect and develop embedded software in modern C/C++ across microcontroller, RTOS and embedded Linux platforms

- Build device user interfaces and HMIs for touchscreen medical products

- Design layered, reusable software platforms with clean hardware abstraction

- Lead board bring-up and hardware/software integration with electronics engineers

- Develop communication interfaces (BLE, Wi-Fi, TCP/IP, serial, CAN, USB)

- Deliver under a formal medical software lifecycle, including requirements, architecture, risk analysis and verification

- Set up and improve CI/CD, static analysis and automated testing

- Lead design and code reviews and mentor engineers

- Work directly with clients to shape requirements and present technical progress

What you’ll bring - Degree in Software, Electrical, Computer or Mechatronics Engineering (or similar)

- 8+ years of commercial embedded software development in C and modern C++ (C++14/17)

- Delivery of software for regulated medical devices under IEC 62304 and ISO 13485

- Experience with RTOS (e.g. FreeRTOS, Zephyr, QNX) and embedded Linux

- Embedded UI development with frameworks such as Qt/QML, LVGL or similar

- Strong software architecture skills, including design patterns and platform abstraction

- Comfort with schematics, debuggers and lab tools during bring-up

- Experience leading or mentoring engineers in a small, high-ownership team

Highly regarded - Safety-critical experience beyond medical (e.g. IEC 61508, aerospace, ATM, automotive)

- ISO 14971 risk management and medical device cybersecurity

- CI/CD with Docker and GitHub Actions, plus static analysis (PC-lint, cppcheck) and TDD

- Simulation, automated UI or screenshot regression testing

- Practical use of AI-assisted and agentic coding tools in development

- Python for test automation and tooling
