The Role

We are seeking a Data Center Engineer to own day-to-day physical operations at our Atlanta data center. Sauce Labs runs one of the largest real-device clouds in the world: over 8,000 physical iOS and Android devices, the host computers that drive them, and the servers and network behind them. This role keeps that fleet online and available for customers to book.

This is an early-career engineering role. You will bring solid data center fundamentals on day one: racking, power, cabling, hardware diagnostics, and working in a production environment. You will also start to build engineering skills on top of that: scripting repetitive work, reading metrics, writing procedures other people follow, and owning a problem from first alert to root cause.

You will work on-site as the hands, eyes, and first line of troubleshooting for the global infrastructure team. Remote engineers and other sites will depend on you to get things done right the first time.

Responsibilities

Device Farm Operations

- Keep real iOS and Android devices online and bookable. Diagnose offline devices and bring them back into service.

- Build, cable, and maintain device racks: host computers, managed USB hubs, and device trays.

- Swap, provision, and decommission devices. Pull devices that show battery swelling, heat damage, or physical wear.

- Device repair and battery swaps.

- Support the macOS and Linux hosts that drive the devices. Gather logs and report patterns to engineering.

Physical Infrastructure

- Rack, stack, cable, and label servers, switches, and storage to our standards.

- Plan rack builds against power capacity, not just physical space. Track power usage at the rack and PDU level.

- Install, upgrade, and replace hardware. Run fiber and copper and test what you run.

- Use out-of-band tools such as iDRAC and iLO to check, reboot, and recover servers.

- Plan airflow and cooling plan for rack installed equipment.

Troubleshooting & Incident Response

- Own hardware ,connectivity, power, cooling, and other physical issues from first alert to root cause, then escalate with clear findings when needed.

- Monitor dashboards and alerts and act on them before customers notice.

- Act as on-site hands during incidents and maintenance windows for remote engineers.

- Write up what failed, why, and what prevents a repeat.

Inventory, Logistics & RMA

- Keep the asset inventory system accurate. Every device, host, and part is where the record says it is.

- Receive shipments, check equipment in and out, and run regular inventory audits.

- Process RMAs and coordinate returns with vendors.

Process, Documentation & Access Control

- Write and maintain runbooks and build standards that other technicians can follow without help.

- Find repetitive manual work and automate it with scripts or tooling.

- Follow physical access and security procedures. Escort and log vendors and visitors.

- Support compliance requirements for data center access, change, and asset handling.

Required Skills

- 2+ years of hands-on work in a production data center, colocation facility, or large lab environment.

- Working knowledge of rack power: PDUs, circuits, amperage, and how to build a rack within its power budget.

- Cabling standards and practice: fiber and copper types, optics, patching, labeling, and cable management.

- Hardware diagnostics on servers and network gear: reading status lights, swapping components, and using out-of-band management.

- Networking fundamentals: TCP/IP, VLANs, DHCP, and DNS, enough to tell a cable problem from a configuration problem.

- Comfortable on the Linux and macOS command line: navigating systems, reading logs, and running basic commands.

- Experience with an asset inventory or ticketing system and the discipline to keep records accurate.

- Clear written communication. You can document a fix so the next person can repeat it.

Nice to Haves

- Scripting in Bash or Python to automate routine tasks.

- Hands-on experience with iOS and Android devices at scale: provisioning, debugging with ADB or Xcode tools, or MDM.

- Experience with managed USB hubs or large USB device deployments.

- Experience with monitoring tools such as Grafana and Prometheus.

- Exposure to Device42 or a similar DCIM or CMDB tool.

- Exposure to Git, CI/CD, or infrastructure-as-code tools.

- Industry certifications such as CompTIA A+, Network+, Server+, or CDCTP.

- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in IT, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent experience.

Schedule & Physical Requirements

- The standard schedule is Monday through Friday, on-site.

- Participate in a rotating on-call schedule for after-hours incidents. Occasional after-hours and weekend work for scheduled maintenance windows.

- Lift and move equipment up to 50 lbs, and work safely with team lifts and lifting equipment for heavier gear.

- Stand, bend, kneel, and work on ladders for extended periods in a loud, temperature-controlled environment.

- Travel domestically up to 20% of the time to support builds and projects at other data centers.

- Pass a background check required for data center access.
