Quality Engineer

Emerson · Erie, Pennsylvania, United States · onsite

As a Quality Engineer, you will play a key role in ensuring the production of specification-compliant, high-quality ductile iron castings through the effective application of foundry process knowledge and advanced metrology techniques. This position combines hands-on manufacturing support with data-driven problem solving to identify process variation, prevent defects, evaluate tooling performance, and drive continuous improvement initiatives. Working closely with Operations, Metallurgy, Engineering, Pattern Shop, Maintenance, suppliers, and customers, you will help strengthen quality performance, reduce scrap, and support operational excellence in a dynamic foundry environment.

In This Role, Your Responsibilities Will Be:

- Maintain and continuously improve quality controls across melting, molding, core making, pouring, shakeout, finishing, and machining processes to ensure consistent casting performance.

- Utilize metrology tools and measurement systems, including CMMs, 3D scanners, optical equipment, and inspection methods, to verify product conformance and monitor tooling condition.

- Investigate casting defects, dimensional variation, and process abnormalities by applying structured problem-solving methodologies and statistical analysis.

- Develop, implement, and sustain process controls, inspection standards, reaction plans, measurement systems, and acceptance criteria that support product quality and operational reliability.

- Lead and support corrective and preventive action activities, validate solutions, and partner with cross-functional teams to drive scrap reduction and continuous improvement initiatives.

- Support customer quality requirements, including complaint resolution, PPAP/FAI activities, containment actions, and new product introduction processes.

- Contribute to Quality Management System effectiveness through documentation, audits, training, standard work development, and supplier quality collaboration.

Who You Are:

You consistently apply knowledge, experience, and sound judgment to make informed decisions and solve complex problems. You build strong partnerships and work collaboratively across functions to achieve shared objectives. You readily adapt your approach in response to new information, changing conditions, and evolving business needs. You analyze data and situations carefully, identify root causes, and implement practical solutions that improve quality, performance, and results.

For This Role, You Will Need:

- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or equivalent combination of foundry, manufacturing, quality, and metrology experience.

- Experience in manufacturing quality, process engineering, or a related technical discipline with a strong focus on measurement systems and process improvement.

- Knowledge of structured problem-solving methodologies, including corrective and preventive actions, statistical process control, capability analysis, failure mode and effects analysis, measurement system analysis, and control plans.

- Strong ability to interpret engineering drawings, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), and mechanical inspection requirements.

- Ability to analyze data, communicate technical findings effectively, and collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders.

Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and standard business software applications.

- Ability to work regularly in a heavy manufacturing or foundry environment while adhering to established safety and personal protective equipment requirements.

Preferred Qualifications That Set You Apart:

- Experience supporting ductile iron, gray iron, or other foundry casting operations, including green sand manufacturing environments.

- Understanding of ductile iron metallurgy, sand systems, core assembly, melt treatment processes, solidification principles, and casting defect analysis.

- Experience supporting PPAP, FAI, customer quality requirements, customer portals, and ISO 9001 audit activities.

- Experience utilizing coordinate measuring machines (CMMs), 3D scanning technologies, and metrology software such as PC-DMIS, Calypso, PolyWorks, or similar platforms.

- Familiarity with advanced metrology practices, tooling qualification, and measurement system optimization in a manufacturing environment.
