Director - Digital Product Management

Employer not yet confirmed · Sunnyvale, California, United States · hybrid

As the Director of Product Management for Agentic SDLC, you will own the product strategy, roadmap and outcomes for the AI tools and agents that build, test, secure, release and operate software at American Express. Your portfolio spans the AI capabilities engineers use every day (coding assistants, code review, test generation, documentation and knowledge tools) and the agents that increasingly run the delivery system itself: triaging builds, remediating vulnerabilities and dependencies, orchestrating releases, gathering control evidence and keeping pipelines healthy.

You will lead a team of product managers and work as a peer to engineering, platform, controls and governance leaders. Together you will move the enterprise from AI-assisted development to agent-executed delivery, with each step earned through measured adoption, clear guardrails and evidence that quality and risk posture are holding or improving.

This role directly supports the primary outcomes of our cloud and engineering strategy: faster delivery, more room for innovation, better economics for every technology team, and a stronger risk and regulatory posture.

Key responsibilities:

- Define and own the product vision, strategy and multi-year roadmap for Agentic SDLC, covering AI developer tools and the agents that operate source control, build, test, artifact and dependency management, security scanning, release and cloud deployment.

- Lead, hire and develop a team of product managers, setting a high bar for customer discovery, prioritization, written product thinking and outcome-based delivery.

- Shape the target operating model for an agent-executed SDLC: which work moves to agents first, how human roles and handoffs change, and what has to be true in the platform, data and controls before each step.

- Own the developer AI tool portfolio, including build-versus-buy decisions, vendor evaluation and management, model selection with engineering partners, enterprise rollout and the cost and value case for each investment.

- Define the product model for agents that act on the SDLC, including scope of authority, tiered autonomy based on risk, human approval and escalation paths, and how every agent action stays observable, explainable and auditable.

- Partner with the Director of Agentic SDLC Controls and Governance, Cyber Security, Technology Risk, Model Risk, Compliance and Internal Audit so that guardrails, policy-as-code and continuous evidence are built into the product from the start rather than added after launch.

- Work closely with engineering and platform leaders on architecture choices that matter to the product, such as agent orchestration, tool and context access, evaluation harnesses, and integration with GitHub, CI/CD, artifact repositories and cloud platforms.

- Run continuous discovery with engineers, engineering leaders and application teams across the enterprise, turning their pain points and workflows into a prioritized backlog and clear product requirements.

- Drive adoption and change management at enterprise scale, including enablement, internal communications, champion networks and feedback loops that show where tools help and where they get in the way.

- Establish and report on the metrics that guide investment, such as active usage and retention, lead time and deployment frequency, change failure rate, share of SDLC work completed by agents, agent accuracy and intervention rate, developer experience and friction, and cost per unit of delivered work.

- Communicate strategy, progress and trade-offs to senior executives, and build the case for funding and organizational change as the operating model evolves.

Qualifications:

- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Business or a related field, or equivalent experience.

- 10+ years of experience in product management, software engineering or platform engineering, with 5+ years in product leadership roles and 3+ years leading product managers.

- A track record of shipping developer tools, developer platforms or internal engineering products used by thousands of engineers in a large, regulated enterprise.

- Deep working knowledge of the modern SDLC, including CI/CD pipelines, SCM platforms (e.g., GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket), artifact repositories (e.g., Artifactory, Nexus), automated testing, release orchestration and infrastructure as code.

- Hands-on experience bringing LLM-based tools or agentic workflows to production, including tool use, orchestration, evaluation and guardrails, and a working understanding of agentic risks such as prompt injection, excessive agency, data leakage and code provenance.

- Experience defining and using developer productivity and delivery metrics (e.g., DORA, SPACE or developer experience surveys) to set goals and make investment decisions.

- Familiarity with software supply chain security (SBOM, artifact signing, provenance, vulnerability and dependency management) and with financial services regulatory and audit expectations (e.g., SOX, SOC 2, PCI DSS, NIST SSDF, NIST AI RMF).

- Experience managing vendor and partner relationships for AI or developer tooling, including commercial evaluation and total-cost analysis.

- Excellent analytical, written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to balance velocity and risk, influence senior executives, and drive complex, cross-organizational decisions to resolution.
