Role Synopsis
The Planner / Scheduler plans and schedules maintenance, instrumentation and electrical (I&E), brownfield construction, and greenfield construction work across Permian production operations. The role helps develop field-ready work packages, integrates resource and material requirements, manages the work-order backlog, and builds realistic weekly and monthly schedules that support safe, efficient execution.
Reporting to the Construction & Maintenance Manager, this position serves as the central coordination point among Operations, Maintenance, I&E, Construction, Reliability, Engineering, Supply Chain, warehouse personnel, contractor resources, and our Midstream partners. The Planner / Scheduler identifies constraints and conflicts before work reaches the field, aligns work with operating and shutdown windows, and helps minimize production impacts and avoidable schedule disruption.
Success requires proficiency in SAP as the work management system, disciplined use of the work-management process and supporting systems, strong field engagement, practical knowledge of maintenance and construction execution, and the ability to turn competing priorities into a clear, executable plan. The role owns planning quality, schedule readiness, backlog visibility, schedule-performance reporting, and continuous improvement through feedback from execution teams.
Key Accountabilities
Work planning and job readiness
- Develop detailed work packages that define scope, work steps, labor, materials, tools, equipment, permits, isolations, safety requirements, access needs, and completion criteria.
- Perform field walkdowns with Operations and execution teams to validate scope, identify constraints, and confirm site readiness before work is committed to the schedule.
- Estimate job durations and resource requirements using historical performance, job complexity, and crew capability.
- Confirm materials, rentals, contractor support, and long-lead items are identified, ordered, tracked, staged, and available before mobilization.
Integrated scheduling and coordination
- Build and maintain integrated weekly and monthly schedules for Maintenance, I&E, construction, shutdown, turnaround, and commissioning activities.
- Facilitate schedule-development and readiness meetings with team leads and partner functions; document priorities, owners, constraints, decisions, and schedule changes.
- Balance workload across internal crews and contractors while identifying conflicts, capacity gaps, and competing resource demands early.
- Coordinate work with Operations to align access, isolations, production impacts, outage windows, and return-to-service requirements.
- Protect committed construction and maintenance milestones by communicating risks early and presenting practical recovery or resource options.
Backlog and work-management governance
- Manage the work-order backlog through prioritization, aging, status review, scope validation, and escalation of work requiring leadership attention.
- Maintain accurate work-order, equipment, PM, schedule, and completion data in the SAP and associated planning tools.
- Coordinate timely closeout of completed work, including actual labor hours, materials used, execution feedback, and required documentation.
- Promote adherence to the work-management process and continuously improve planning quality through feedback loops with field crews and team leads.
Performance, cost, and continuous improvement
- Track and report schedule compliance, planning accuracy, planned-versus-unplanned work, backlog health, material readiness, carryover, break-in work, and work-order closeout performance.
- Analyze maintenance and construction data to identify recurring constraints, productivity losses, cost drivers, and opportunities to improve PM strategies and execution efficiency.
- Support cost transparency by aligning planned labor, contractor, equipment, and material requirements with approved work scopes and budgets.
- Identify opportunities to combine work within common outage windows to reduce repeat mobilization, production deferral, and operational disruption.
Essential Experience and Education
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Demonstrated experience planning or scheduling maintenance, construction, turnaround, or operations work in oil and gas, industrial, manufacturing, utilities, or a comparable asset-intensive environment.
- Working knowledge of work-order planning, backlog management, preventive and corrective maintenance, job readiness, permitting, isolation, and contractor coordination.
- Proficiency using SAP as a work management system to create and maintain work orders, support planning and scheduling, manage backlog visibility, and report on executable work plans.
- Ability to perform field walkdowns and work effectively in an operating production environment.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to facilitate cross-functional planning meetings and communicate schedule risks, trade-offs, and decisions.
Desirable Criteria
- Experience supporting upstream oil and gas production, wellsite facilities, gathering systems, or related Permian Basin operations.
- Experience coordinating multi-discipline Maintenance, I&E, Construction, Reliability, Operations, Engineering, Supply Chain, warehouse, and contractor work.
- Experience with shutdown, turnaround, tie-in, commissioning, and new-well facility scheduling.
- Experience developing work packages, managing long-lead materials, and using schedule and backlog metrics to improve crew productivity.
- Post-secondary technical training, trade certification, associate degree, or bachelor's degree in maintenance, construction management, engineering technology, operations, supply chain, or a related field.
- Safety-focused and field-oriented, with disciplined attention to job readiness and control-of-work requirements.
- Organized and detail-driven, with the ability to manage multiple work streams and changing priorities without losing accountability.
- Collaborative and influential across functions, with the confidence to challenge incomplete scopes and unrealistic schedules constructively.
- Analytical and improvement-minded, using data and execution feedback to strengthen planning quality and schedule performance.
- Pragmatic and accountable, with a strong bias toward clear ownership, timely decisions, and executable plans.
