This role owns the database strategy and standards behind our PACS, RIS, and enterprise imaging platforms, ensuring the systems that store and serve healthcare data remain scalable, secure, and highly available. Beyond technical direction, this role builds and develops a high-performing team of database engineers and architects — hiring, coaching, and setting clear goals that connect individual growth to team and business outcomes. The Database Manager partners closely with software engineering, DevOps, infrastructure, and product leadership to align database strategy with product roadmaps, and represents database considerations in decisions that affect system reliability and patient care.

Key Responsibilities

- Lead, hire, and develop a team of database engineers and architects, setting clear performance and development goals, conducting regular check-ins, and building a team capable of supporting Intelerad's current and future database needs.

- Own the database architecture strategy and standards for Intelerad's medical imaging platforms, ensuring designs are scalable, secure, and reliable across on-premises, cloud, and hybrid deployment models.

- Drive operational excellence and reliability for all production database systems, setting performance benchmarks, overseeing capacity planning, and ensuring robust backup, disaster recovery, and business continuity practices are in place.

- Establish and enforce database security protocols and compliance frameworks, including HIPAA and healthcare interoperability standards such as DICOM, HL7, and FHIR, to protect data integrity and confidentiality across all systems.

- Partner with software engineering, DevOps, infrastructure, and product leadership to align database strategy with product roadmaps, evaluate and select database technologies, and lead major migrations, upgrades, and modernization initiatives.

Qualifications & Experience

- 7+ years of experience in database architecture, design, and administration

- 2+ years directly managing or leading database engineers or architects.

- Demonstrated expertise with both relational databases (Oracle, PostgreSQL, SQL Server) and NoSQL databases (MongoDB, Cassandra) in large-scale, high-availability environments.

- Proven experience setting database security protocols and compliance frameworks, with direct experience in healthcare data protection and HIPAA compliance.

- Experience with cloud database platforms and services on AWS, Azure, or GCP, including database migration strategies and hybrid architectures.

- Demonstrated ability to hire, coach, and develop technical talent, and to communicate database strategy and trade-offs clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications & Special Requirements

- Experience with medical imaging systems architecture (PACS, RIS, VNA, or enterprise imaging platforms) and healthcare data standards such as DICOM, HL7, and FHIR.

- Experience with Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform or CloudFormation, and CI/CD pipelines for database deployments.

- Professional certification such as AWS Certified Database Specialty, Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate, or Oracle Certified Professional.

- Experience leading distributed, remote-first teams across time zones, within Agile development environments.

- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Software Engineering, or equivalent

- Occasional travel (up to 10%) for team offsites and cross-functional planning sessions.
