Our client is a food manufacturer with operations in Newport News, Virginia. Relocation assistance is available.
The Role
The Senior Project Engineer leads a small team on medium to large projects, or owns a critical portion of a more complex initiative, such as production line modifications from concept to execution. You will work independently and make decisions with impact, while working with senior leaders on the most complex challenges. The role involves travel to other locations about 50% of the time.
What You Will Do
- Develop engineering designs, material specifications and project cost estimates.
- Conduct feasibility studies and research to support design choices.
- Make sure designs meet required standards and codes, validate field work and create as-built drawings.
- Review engineering submissions for accuracy and compliance, and coordinate project activity with vendors, contractors and plant teams to stay on schedule.
- Direct vendors and contractors on layout planning and utility requirements.
- Define project scope, prepare proposals and evaluate bids.
- Monitor installations so they meet specifications, budgets and timelines, and manage project budgets.
- Submit regular status reports to management and assist with contract administration.
- Maintain documentation including manuals, drawings, specifications and vendor contacts.
What You Bring
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Engineering Management or a related field and 5+ years of experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Food manufacturing background
- Project management, contract administration, and national codes and standards interpretation skills
- Knowledge of installation and construction project scheduling
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, engineering economics and Microsoft Office
- Willingness to travel to other locations about 50% of the time
- Strong communication, planning and analytical skills
Nice to Have
- Knowledge of engineering principles and techniques related to food processing and the meat industry
- Experience managing multi-million dollar projects with large scopes
