Community Manager
valency · Berkeley, CA · onsite
About ValencyValency Systems is a small, dynamic team of engineers, scientists, and researchers building the global hub for the agentic research era.
We're based in Berkeley, California, and we're building something that matters. If you care about open science, advancing research at the speed of thought, and using AI to accelerate discovery, we'd love to talk.
Our team is hybrid. We come together in person 3 days a week, with the option for 2 days of remote work.
The RoleResearchers can smell a sales pitch from a mile away. They trust tools their peers use, papers their peers share, and people who clearly understand the science. That is the community we need to earn.
Valency Hub just opened as a public alpha: a neutral place to publish, fork, and discuss AI-assisted research, grounded in the real scientific record. MCP Bond connects the AI systems researchers already use to tens of millions of papers and preprints. The products are live. Now we need the person who brings scientists in, makes them feel at home, and gives them reasons to come back.
As our first Community Manager, you will own Valency's day-to-day relationship with the research community: across social media, Discord, the Hub itself, and in person. You will spot the interesting paper, the researcher worth spotlighting, and the question that keeps coming up, and turn each into a conversation. You will also be the team's ear, bringing back what researchers actually say so it shapes what we build.
This role is open to recent graduates. We care more about judgment, writing, and genuine passion for science than years of experience. There is no existing playbook here; you will help write it.
What You'll DoRun our social presence
- Own Valency's channels on Bluesky, X, LinkedIn, and YouTube, writing for each platform's norms rather than cross-posting the same thing everywhere
- Turn papers, preprints, and discussions on Hub into posts and threads that researchers want to share: accurate, specific, and free of hype
- Join the conversations scientists are already having online, especially around AI in research, open science, preprints, and peer review
Build and care for the community
- Contribute to our Discord: welcome newcomers, answer questions, moderate fairly, and route bugs and feature requests to the right teammate
- Recruit researchers to publish, discover, and discuss on Valency Hub, and help new research groups get started
- Spotlight the people doing interesting work: researcher profiles, paper highlights, and "how I use it" stories
- Help set and uphold community norms, including how AI-assisted work and AI reviewers are discussed respectfully and honestly
Bring people together
- Plan and host virtual events: office hours, AMAs with researchers, demos, and journal-club style discussions
- Organize in-person meetups in Berkeley and across Bay Area campuses, and help represent Valency at scientific conferences and hackathons
Close the loop
- Contribute to our newsletter, blog, and researcher-friendly explainers of Hub and MCP Bond
- Share a short weekly read-out with the team: what researchers are saying, asking, and struggling with
- Track what is working (growth, engagement, and which posts and events drive sign-ups) and use it to decide what to do next
What Success Looks LikeIn your first 6 to 12 months, you will help Valency begin tracking and materially grow:
- Active researchers in our Discord and on Valency Hub, week over week
- Researchers publishing and discussing papers on Hub, across a growing range of fields
- A consistent posting rhythm on each channel that researchers engage with and share
- A regular cadence of virtual events, plus at least one in-person gathering each quarter
- A small group of researcher champions who post about Valency on their own
- Clear attribution from community activity to sign-ups and usage, so we know what is working
Who You Are- You have 0 to 3 years of experience. Recent graduates are very welcome.
- You write clearly and quickly. You can turn a paper abstract into a post a postdoc would actually share.
- You are fluent in social media and know that Bluesky, LinkedIn, X, YouTube, and Discord each have their own culture.
- You are genuinely curious about science and can follow a technical conversation without needing every term explained.
- You already use AI tools in your work or studies, and you are honest about where they fall short.
- You are organized enough to run an event end to end, and warm enough that people want to come back.
- You see the gap and close it without waiting to be asked.
Bonus points
- A degree or research experience in any science: you have read papers, worked in a lab, or presented a poster
- An existing presence or following in a scientific community online
- Experience running a club, journal club, student organization, hackathon, or conference
- Familiarity with open science, preprint servers (arXiv, bioRxiv, medRxiv), and how peer review works
- Short-form video editing, or design skills with tools like Figma or Canva
- Experience moderating a Discord or similar online community
Why Join Us- You will be the first voice many researchers hear from Valency, and you will shape how a new kind of research platform shows up in the world
- You will work directly with founders, engineers, and scientists, and with researchers from universities and national labs
- A conference and learning budget, and a team that publishes and shares openly by default
- A small, high-trust team where your decisions have outsized impact
