Project Engineer / Senior Project Engineer

AtkinsRéalis · GB.United Kingdom, United Kingdom · hybrid

Job Description

Overview

AtkinsRéalis has one of the rail industry’s largest multidisciplinary engineering teams. Our Engineering Management practice works across complex railway projects, helping clients integrate engineering disciplines and deliver safe, compliant and buildable solutions through design, construction, testing and commissioning.

You will join a collaborative team of Project Engineers, Senior Project Engineers and Engineering Managers, working with specialists from across AtkinsRéalis and our clients’ organizations. The role offers varied project experience and opportunities to develop wider engineering-management capability and professional responsibility.

Your role

- Working under the direction of an Engineering Manager, you will coordinate defined engineering packages and interfaces through design, procurement, construction, installation, testing and commissioning.

- You will work across disciplines, recognizing dependencies and interface risks and involving the appropriate technical specialists and authorities where required.

- Projects may involve interfaces across materials and equipment, construction, systems integration, signaling, control, power, mechanical and electrical systems, telecommunications, track, civils, geotechnical engineering, human factors and environmental disciplines.

- You are not expected to be a specialist in every discipline, but you will need sufficient understanding and judgement to coordinate their contributions effectively.

Appointment level

- Project Engineers will work in appropriate direction while taking responsibility for defined engineering activities, packages and interfaces.

- Senior Project Engineers will operate with greater autonomy, coordinate more complex packages and interfaces, and support less experienced colleagues, while remaining under the overall direction of the Engineering Manager.

Engineering coordination and integration

- Coordinate defined multidisciplinary engineering packages and interfaces across design and delivery, ensuring that technical information, decisions, dependencies and changes are communicated clearly between disciplines, suppliers, construction teams, project management and clients.

- Take responsibility for agreed engineering activities, deliverables and interfaces, while referring matters outside delegated authority to the Engineering Manager or relevant discipline authority.

Engineering control and assurance

- Coordinate engineering documentation, requirements, deliverables, technical queries and assurance evidence for assigned packages, maintaining traceability and highlighting gaps or overdue actions.

- Plan and coordinate engineering interface meetings and interdisciplinary reviews, ensuring that technical inputs, decisions and actions are properly recorded and progressed in accordance with the project’s engineering-management arrangements.

- Support package completion and handover by coordinating the required design, construction, testing, commissioning, materials, compliance, asset and Health and Safety File records.

Materials, construction and delivery

- Coordinate materials and equipment activities for assigned packages, including schedules, technical submissions, procurement interfaces, compliance evidence and installation readiness.

- Support engineering delivery through construction, installation, testing and commissioning, coordinating responses to site issues and ensuring that technical changes are properly assessed and recorded.

Issue resolution, safety and risk

- Work with discipline and delivery teams to resolve engineering issues within assigned packages, considering their wider safety, compliance, constructability, interface, cost and programme implications.

- Challenge matters that may compromise safe or compliant delivery and escalate issues outside delegated authority or requiring formal technical acceptance.

Communication and stakeholder coordination

- Build effective working relationships across engineering, construction, suppliers, project management and client teams, communicating technical matters clearly and ensuring that agreed actions are understood and progressed.

Tender and work-winning support

- Contribute to tenders by helping to define engineering scope, deliverables, interfaces, assumptions, risks, programme, resource requirements and delivery approach for relevant packages.

About you

Essential qualifications and experience

- Demonstrable post-training experience in railway or comparable safety-critical engineering, typically gained through equivalent experience in relevant roles.

- Practical experience coordinating defined engineering packages and interfaces across design and construction, involving more than one discipline or project stage.

- Experience of materials or equipment, technical deliverables, construction interfaces, technical queries and engineering change.

- A relevant technical qualification through degree, HNC/HND, apprenticeship or equivalent learning and experience.

- Evidence of continuing professional development and a commitment to maintaining current technical and industry knowledge.

- Experience using project information-management and document-control systems, such as Microsoft 365, ProjectWise or comparable platforms.

Desirable qualifications and experience

- Membership of an appropriate professional engineering institution and Engineering Council registration at EngTech, IEng or CEng level, or demonstrable progress towards registration.

- Working knowledge of railway engineering safety and risk-management arrangements, including CDM 2015 and, where applicable, the Common Safety Method for Risk Evaluation and Assessment.

- Broad understanding of railway systems and experience working with design, construction, installation, testing or commissioning teams in a railway or comparable safety-critical environment.

- PTS certification and a full UK driving license would be advantageous where required for project duties.

Essential personal qualities

- Clear and credible communicator, able to explain technical matters to engineering, construction and project-management audiences.

- Organized and dependable, able to manage competing priorities and follow actions through to completion.

- Practical and solutions-focused, with sound judgement and an understanding of delegated authority.

- Collaborative and adaptable, able to work effectively across disciplines, organizations and project stages.

- Confident in challenging matters that could affect safety, compliance, constructability or successful delivery.

Location and working arrangements

The role may be based on an AtkinsRéalis office in London, Glasgow, York, Birmingham or Derby, with flexibility in location and working arrangements.

Depending on project needs, the role will involve collaboration with engineering and project teams and travel to AtkinsRéalis and client offices, supplier facilities, construction sites and operational railway locations across the UK.
